Today, Soulforce accomplishes its mission primarily through community organizing, education and training, advocacy for public and private institutional policy change and street-based nonviolent resistance to overt discrimination. We train our volunteers in all aspects of advocacy for a just society, including the time-tested method of civil disobediance.
Over the last twelve years, we have deepened our understanding that patriarchy and the binary constructs of sexuality and gender are the primary sources of religious bigotry and oppression. This understanding has helped us refine the messaging and focus of our organization so that no one is left outside the gate when we advocate for change.
In spite of the amazing work accomplished by our co-founders and young adults, we know we have only just begun. And, we are in the midst of a major organization transition as Rev. Mel White and his partner enter retirement (effective January 2011). It is now up to the rest of us—the Board of Directors, staff, volunteorganization that will continue to truly change the world.
