Soulforce supports the UMC and Rev. Amy Delong by attending the church trial

WHO:  United Methodist Church and Rev. Amy Delong

WHAT:  The UMC will be conducting a church trial of Rev. Amy Delong. Rev. Amy is charged with 1) being a self-avowed practicing homosexual in violation of ¶2702.1b of the Discipline and 2) with conducting ceremonies which celebrate homosexual unions in violation of ¶2702.1b of the Discipline.

WHEN:  June 21-23, 2011

WHERE:  Kaukauna, WI (near Green Bay & Oshkosh, WI)

As is its pattern in matters regarding human sexuality, The United Methodist Church has once again chosen legalism over love and punishment over partnership.

Rev. Amy DeLong, an effective preacher and pastor, finds herself on the wrong side of church law because of:

Pastoral Care (she gracefully cared for a loving lesbian couple by officiating at their Holy Union) and

Love (she and Val, her partner of 15 years, share a life-affirming, deeply loving relationship).

Both of these affirmations of love are prohibited by the United Methodist Church and are considered “chargeable offenses.” Conviction of a chargeable offense can lead to the removal of clergy credentials and all ministerial privileges.

From Amy’s Love On Trial website (www.loveontrial.org)

Soulforce will join Rev. Amy and hordes of her supporters at the church trial in June. You are invited to stand in truth and be a witness as the UMC struggles to reconcile its historical inclusion of all with its hysterical exclusion of LGBTQ people. So far, a group of veteran Soulforce’rs and new friends are signed up to be in Kaukauna…won’t you join us?  To sign up and/or for more information, write bill@soulforce.org.

Rules are in place for a reason; either you follow them or you don’t, and typically there is punishment for them.  That is what we teach kids right?  If you don’t like the rules go somewhere else; more and more people are wanting to stay somewhere and change the rules for the majority.

Apparently other views are not allowed on this page; are we pushing an agenda here?

As a pansexual member of the United Methodist Church (UMC), it disgusts me that our church tries to shame us for the natural love that God has given us. The UMC’s position is “in keeping with historic Christianity as well as the Bible,” according to the “UMC position on Amy Delong trial” above. 100 years ago, slavery was in this same position and, yet, it was abhorred by the UMC. Why must members of the LGBTQ community suffer for what they feel is right? I am praying for Rev. Delong and hope that someday people will see that religion and non-heterosexuality can be compatible.

I think that the United Methodist Church should stop throwing stones, and begin living in the 21st. Century.  I’m a progressive Christian Gay Man who was once a member of the Methodist church. It sickens me to see this kind of sexual persecution occuring in this day and age. Bless You,Rev. Amy.

    Sincerely,

The Bible says that WHOSOEVER accepts Jesus as their savior will be allowed into the kingdom of heaven. A church, no matter the denomination, should be an all-inclusive and welcoming place for all different shapes and sizes. There’s obviously some kind of lets-spam-this-page-campaign going on here – My reply to you: A church is not a government. Everyone should be treated equally, as I’m sure that’s how God would want it. Since we are ALL EQUAL, the clergy in a church have no type of authority over any other person. Therefore, a church doesn’t need to create “rules” telling it’s members what they can and cannot do. These regulations shouldn’t even be in place. They are certainly discriminatory against LGBT people and the church should drop the pathetic “charges” against Rev. Amy.

Jesus didn’t run away from a religious establishment whose “rules” he considered unjust. He stayed in relationship with them and spoke the truth about how their rules were hurting the marginalized. Let’s take care not to side with modern-day Pharisees.

Amy:  You are living in the Spirit of the Reformation and the reformers– lifting God’s church and His people toward Him.  Do not give up.  Your courage is an example to all Christians.

I’d like to say I support you, and I honestly believe that Jesus would too! If fundamental Christians would look at Christs ministry, they would see that they are treating us and others like the Jews and Pharisees treated the folks that Jesus hung with! Think of the woman who washed his feet with her hair! The woman who touched his garment to receive healing! God blessed the relationship between Jonathon and David! He created us! And loves us!

I am someone who loves diversity.  There is diversity in every species.  It speaks to the nature of God and that we were all created in God’s image.  Diversity is normative.  It saddens me greatly that this is happening to anyone but especially to someone who has dedicated her life to serving others.  It is my fervent prayer that those who spend their energy marginalizing others soften their hearts and see that they are living out of fear.  That energy is so much better spent when you live out of love.

I’ve concluded from studying the Bible that homosexuality is a sin.
Can someone please tell me where they get that it is not a sin?
Without the “it feels right”, “God made me this way” arguments.
Please, from the Bible, God’s Word, show me proof that it is not a sin.

I had been in Kaukauna in May and stopped at the Riverside Park shelter, where supporters of Rev. Amy were to meet. It is my hometown which I briefly visit about every other year. I regret I was not there with you to support Rev. Amy. There is no change without conflict and if nonviolent reconciliation and renewal can be outcomes. Religious oppression is very real. It is not too strong to call it psychological terrorism that can inflict spiritual wounds. I pray that through this “trial” of Rev. Amy, there may be hope and healing leading to full inclusion of G.L.B.T. people in the U.M.C. and all Christian churches. ……………Peace & Love…………Joe McCarty

I am a gay opera-loving dude also and I have an icon of Jonathan and David, which we displayed and reverenced at the Commitment Service that my partner and I had 4 years ago. A good website is parterre.com for comments on what’s going on in the opera world. I grew up on the Met broadcasts as a teen, listening to broadcasts of Tebaldi, Corelli, Price, Tucker, Milnes, and others. Great memories of seeing and hearing Elisabeth Schwarzkopf, Victoria De Los Angeles, Rita Streich, Shirley Verrett, and Eileen Farrell in concert. All these divas are now dead, but live  on through their recordings. I have given some modest financial support to Soulforce, but regret that I have never taken part in any of the nonviolent actions, back in my youth I was very active in the peace movement . I regret that I have not been bolder in standing up against oppression. So glad that Soulforce is leading the way in this….Sempronio AKA Joseph McCarty

Thank you for this! Diversity is a beautiful and precious thing. And LGBTQ people are a magnificent part of the diversity of creation!

Catholics believe the communion wafer turns to real flesh because the Bible says so (John 6).  Evangelicals do not.  You folks idolize the Bible, but don’t tell me you consistently follow it.  Otherwise, divorce and remarriage would unhesitatingly be condemned by all churches.  And going by the Old Testament, you’d still be practicing polygamy and killing witches and disobedient children.  We UUs believe in this thing called reason.  Give it a try sometime.

  • Jeffery Johnson

Funny statement from someone I assume to be Evangelical.  Because the vast majority of Evangelicals (if not all of them) believe that rules don’t save you, but that you’re saved by grace through faith.  And let’s face it.  Some rules are unjust and, well, stupid.

  • Revtjchase

supporting hate and discrimination  is not a christian trait.  God loves all of his children and does not discriminate.  Making rules that instill discrimination and hate does not show one who is ecclesiastic.

  • Revtjchase

One of the things we should teach our children is that there are all kinds of people in the world, and it is wrong to hate anyone of them.  The Bible says that WHOSOEVER accepts Jesus as their savior will be allowed into the kingdom of heaven. A church, no matter the denomination, should be an all-inclusive and welcoming place for all different shapes and sizes. People who cannot post their real names when making comments are true cowards and afraid that others will judge them.
