Simple Action For Faith Leaders to Support LGBT Justice

Soulforce’s history says that we don’t change the minds of the world about LGBT people unless we change the minds of faith leaders and particularly those who are heads of denominations and colleges/universities that produce the next generation of faith leaders.  I think it is always important to join with these voices.

With that in mind, I am sharing a message I received from Rev. Steven Baines.

I am writing to you about an urgent clergy/religious leader sign-on letter regarding deep concerns with President Obama’s lack of action in reforming aspects of the Faith-Based Initiative. The letter was drafted by the Coalition Against Religious Discrimination. A similar letter in 2001 about then President Bush’s attempt to force religious discrimination through the Faith-Based Initiative was signed by 1000 clergy.

It is time we let our faithful voices be heard by President Obama. We expect him to keep the campaign promises he made in 2008 regarding constitutional reform of the Faith-Based office. He has had nearly three years to make simple reforms to government funding of faith-based organizations.

Please take two important actions today.

  1. Read and sign on to the letter.
  2. Forward this message to your fellow faith leaders.

Together we will create a just and fair world.
