Take Action: Urge Southern Baptist Convention to Issue Apology to LGBTQ People

Believe Out Loud, Faith In America, Get Equal, Truth Wins Out, Association of Welcoming & Affirming BaptistsSoulfore is working in coalition with several organizations to get the word out about the upcoming Southern Baptist Convention in Phoenix next week.  We are gathering a critical mass of signatures calling for an apology from the denomination to the LGBTQ community for the harm done by their discriminatory policies and practices.

June 15, 2011 is the 16-year anniversary of a different moment in history when the SBC had a call to conscience – when they apologized to the African-American community for their past racist policies.

While we cannot compare forms of discrimination, we can remind ourselves and the SBC that change is possible.  We can look at the reality of the damage caused by religion-based discrimination and decide to do differently.  Racism is not over in this country, just as oppression of sexual and gender diversity continues.

Many people experience the impact of multiple forms of injustice. Our work is not done toward ending racism, classism, transphobia, homophobia, able-ism and many other kinds of discrimination, and neither is the SBC’s.  Join us today in calling on the Southern Baptist Convention to apologize to the LGBTQ community and start a process of reconciliation.

Follow the link here to sign the petition.
Read the Spanish language version of the petition.

Thank you,
The Soulforce Team

While I can sympathize deeply with anyone who has been treated cruelly, the article does not specify what the SBC did ?
If they are speaking their “truth” sincerely in love based on their own scriptural interpretation , shouldn’t we repect theirs and others rights to “agree to disagree”? Westboro Baptist church notwithstanding, I find the vast majority of those who differ with the views of the LGBT community to be civil in their discourse. It is unrealistic to expect various Christian denominations to leave the tenets of their faith and doctrine based on their scriptural interpretation about the issue of homosexuality. Admittedly, any one can be sincere, yet sincerely wrong. But petitions such as this making demands seem as logical as demanding a Democrat become a Republican or vice versa. Just a thought.

Apologize for what? For preaching the Word of God without apology? Why not a petition to get God to apologize for declaring sin?

If we didn’t challenge the sincere beliefs of well meaning Christians over the last forty years, there never would have been the enormous shift that we have experienced in mainline Christianity away from exclusion, and toward inclusion.  Many years ago when I was a representative from MCC to the National Council of Churches of Christ USA many thought it was laughable that we would question their sincere beliefs.  But we did, respectfully, and occassionally right in their faces with love.  Today, many of those who never believed that they would stand with us, now do.  And more than that, help to have affirming congregations in their own denominations.  By the way, these days, many Republicans are becoming Democrats.  Expected norms change all the time.

I want a petition where we tell the Southern Baptist Convention (who btw also passed a resolution to convert Jews so Jesus would return to save their sorry asses) to take their fucking homo-hot-&-bothered tyrannical theocRAT kill gays bible and shove it down their own fucking throats and choke on it. I’ll sign that petition. I don’t need an apology because i don’t give a fuck what they think about me as a Jew or as a dyke. Those fucking theocRATS need to drop dead.

I was raised a Southern Baptist and I am now a lesbian. For years I tried being heterosexual but I was never really happy. My grandfather is an ex SBC pastor and against homosexuality and very racist. My mom is now a member of a nondenominational church amd just as prejudiced against my lifestyle. I have not told my grandfather of the recent happiness I have found with my girlfriend for fear of the judgement and consequences I know will follow. My mother does enough judging for now. She constantly tells me I am going to hell and has told my girlfriend she is Satan. One thing I learned growing up a Southern Baptist is that even if homosexuality is a sin it is no greater or lesser a sin than the judgement some so called Christians pass on the LGBTQ community. Maybe they should be reminded of their own sins and rember Jesus can forgive any sin but he will overlook none. My discovering why I was so unhappy all these years has brought me closer to God and came right after I rededicated my life to Him. I truly believe God put my girlfriend in my life to open my eyes to the hypocracy of the church and to show me what real love is.

    Essential to a good God of love is His wrath against evil.  Man make themselves the objects of God’s wrath when they sin and do not repent (to turn from or away).  God is displeased with sin, therefore, the repentance, the turning away is what is essential. If one does not repent, he can expect the wrath of God.  God is against this lifestlye. In Romans 1:17  we understand God has manifested His Truth. vs,21-32 when they knew God,they glorified  him not as God, neither were thankful,vain in their imaginations, and their foolish heart was darkened. Professing themselves to be wise, they became fools and changed the glory of the uncorrupitble God into an image made like to corruptible man, and to birds, and four-footed beasts, and creeping things.  WHEREFORE GOD  also gave them up to uncleanness through the lusts of their own hearts, to dishonor their own bodies BETWEEN themselves. Who changed the TRUTH of GOD into a lie, and served the creature more than the CREATOR, who is blessed forever. AMEN  v26.speaks of women changing the natural use into that which is against nature.v27. and likewise also the men…burned in their lust one toward another;
Enough said, just read on and read the many scriptures that GOD INSPIRED MEN TO WRITE–his WORD.  I do not personally judge anyone, but do desire for everyone to come to repentance regardless of their sins, so that they can have eternal LIFE with HIM. That is what we as Christians are called to do, to pray not to judge.  God is the judge (vs32).  Homosexuality is not the ultimate sin, but as the ultimate distortion of God’s creative genius.  I encourage anyone who reads this to not distort God’s Truth–the concept of God and of His creation.  Read Leviticus 18:22; 20:13,1Corith 6:9
As a Christian I can love you, but I can not agree with this lifestyle and/or support it in any way.  God’s judgement will come!

While many in Soulforce readily identify as Christian, not all of us do. And, for those of us who hold the Bible as our spiritual source and guide, we all agree that the Bible is a living scripture, constantly breathed by God, and not a collection of words and books that died the moment they were written. For more information on the living, breathing scripture, you may want to read What the Bible Does and Doesn’t Say About Homosexuality (http://www.soulforce.org/resources/what-the-bible-says-and-doesnt-say-about-homosexuality/) or Jesus, The Bible, and Homosexuality by Jack Rogers.
At Soulforce, we stand with a growing number of Christians who insist Christian faith is completely compatible with all of our sexual orientations and gender identities. This is not a position we’ve come to lightly, but rather one we’ve arrived at after decades of research, study, fellowship, and contemplation.

There are many things about the SBC theology that is erroneous, but the preaching against the sin of homosexuality is not one of them!

  • Lakes2you

I been navigating trough all the links of this site trying to find the logic about what this people say that the scriptures do not talk about homosexuality to be wrong,  but the reality is that the Bible is clear about the condemnation of homosexual behavior  Romans 1:
For even though they knew God, they did not honor Him as God or give thanks, but they became futile in their speculations, and their foolish heart was darkened.

22     Professing to be wise, they became fools,

23     and exchanged the glory of the incorruptible God for an image in the form of corruptible man and of birds and four-footed animals and crawling creatures.

24     Therefore God gave them over in the lusts of their hearts to impurity, so that their bodies would be dishonored among them.

25     For they EXCHANGED the TRUTH of God for a LIE, and worshiped and served the creature rather than the Creator, who is blessed forever. Amen.

26     For this reason God gave them over to degrading passions; for their women EXCHANGED the NATURAL function for that which is UNNATURAL,

27     and in the same way also the men abandoned the NATURAL function of the woman and burned in their desire toward one another, MEN with MEN committing indecent acts and receiving in their own persons the due penalty of their error.

28     And just as they did not see fit to acknowledge God any longer, God gave them over to a depraved mind, to do those things which are not proper,

29     being filled with all unrighteousness, wickedness, greed, evil; full of envy, murder, strife, deceit, malice; they are gossips,

30     slanderers, haters of God, insolent, arrogant, boastful, inventors of evil, disobedient to parents,

         31     without understanding, untrustworthy, unloving, unmerciful;

32     and although THEY KNOW the ordinance of God, that those who practice such things are worthy of death, they not only do the same, but also give hearty approval to those who practice them.

This is the reason why God call to repentance because there is judgment He have establish a day in which He will judge the world  and not only for the sin of homosexuality but for adulterers, lairs etc. God is who create and sustains the world  He have all the right to judge his creation He is God and he makes the rules liked or not.

And the sin of Sodom was going after strange flesh.

4 Now before they lay down, the men of the city, the men of Sodom, both old and young, all the people from every quarter, surrounded the house. 5 And they called to Lot and said to him, “Where are the MEN who came to you tonight? Bring them out to us that we MAY KNOW THEM CARNALLY.”
6 So Lot went out to them through the doorway, shut the door behind him, 7 and said, “Please, my brethren, do not do so wickedly! 8 See now, I have two DAUGHTERS who have not known a man; please, let me bring them out to you, and you may do to them as you wish; only do nothing to these men, since this is the reason they have come under the shadow of my roof.”
    Gen 19:4-8

Even as Sodom and Gomorrha, and the cities about them in like manner,
giving themselves over to fornication, and going after STRANGE FLESH,
are set forth for an example, suffering the vengeance of eternal fire.   Jude 1:7Do not try to rationalized or justified your way of life homosexuality is a choice in the same way I have the choice to be an adulterer and God judges all sin in the same way sin is sin only repentance (turning around from sin) and accepting Christ My hope is that some day you came to repentance before is too late.

At Soulforce, we take Biblical scholarship seriously and have come to the steadfast conclusion that homosexuality is not a sin. People, gay and straight alike, do things that are harmful, hurtful, and unjust. Living whole, authentic, loving lives as LGBTQ is not something that is sick or sinful. We are honored that you shared a bit of your story with us. Happy to be on this journey together!

  • http://www.briangerald.com/ Brian Gerald

At Soulforce, we cannot “agree to disagree” about our basic humanity and right to life and love. In this context, “Agree to disagree” means, “You are going to think I am less of a person, and I’m going to let you.” That’s just not something to which we can agree.

We are moved to engage in dialogue–and to call individuals and organizations to account–because we believe in a vision of a healed community, that reconciliation is possible, that we should not judge the motivation of our adversary, that we can learn something from everyone, and that in the end, we will all be better off when we are reconciled.

An apology from the SBC? I think pigs will fly before you get that. I think it’s funny how you stated in a different post “At Soulforce, we take Biblical scholarship seriously and have come to the steadfast conclusion that homosexuality is not a sin”. Who made Soulforce the authority on what sin is and isn’t? If you claim to take Biblical scholarship seriously then you would be honest with yourselves and admit that homosexuality is most definitely a sin. Any sexual immorality is a sin. I’ll put it this way, if you are having sex outside of marriage then you are committing sexual immorality. God only honors marriage between a man and woman. So, even if homosexuals were to be married so that they wouldn’t be committing sexual immorality, it still wouldn’t matter because God does not honor those types of unions. If He did, then when He created the world He would’ve made 2 men or 2 women begin the human race. But, if that had happened then would be no human race. 2 men cannot make children neither can 2 women. Eh, it’s just something to think about.

I am so glad that i come upon this site…I am just new here. and i was wondering what really are the sins of homosexuality…please enlighten me..

  • Rready55

Nobody is denying anyone right to life, Biblical concept is biblical concept, trying to go against the Biblical commandments (such as the sin of homosexuality) and yet wanting everyone to see this obvious disobedient of Gods commandment in the Bible as nothing (no sin at all) dont look right to me, we all sin sometime, the difference is we recognize it as sin, God has his commandements and no matter what you think or do, He doesnt change is commandment just because you cant comply, If you want to be or you are infact a xtian, the Bible has always been the same, with the same kind of sins that God call sins, website dont change it, evolution wouldnt change it, notrhing will change it, to ask SBC  for apology (if on the fact that they preach homosexuality as sin, using the scripture) will be somewhat ridiculous dont you think, its just like asking soulforce to right a petition for asking SBC  for petition, I was thinking there is freedom of religous practice in this country, if my religion says dont wear a hat, but i want to be part of that religion but yet i want to wear a hat, then look for a place where you could mix match (those places are always around), the right thing should be to leave that association, but……….
I love everyone with the love of God but the truth is God condemns homosexuality in the bible
