My New Equality Ride Family
Posted in 2010 Equality Ride by Emily Zahn on March 5th, 2010

Today we begin our two-month journey seeking justice for LGBTQ students. Our first stop is Valley Forge Christian College, which is located in Phoenixville, PA. There is an air of excitement as everyone loaded the bus (which we have lovingly named “The Big Queer Bus”) for the first time this morning. We are all a little nervous but mostly super excited to be doing activism for the next two months.
For those of you who haven’t heard the hype: The Equality Ride was started in 2006 by Jake Reitan when he promised a friend at a Christian school that a bus would roll up to his campus and talk about God’s love for LGBTQ (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, and Queer) folks. We are continuing in that tradition. We go to predominately Christian schools that have policies that discriminate against LGBTQ folks and hope to open up dialogue and try to end the spiritual violence that these people are facing on their campuses. While not everyone on the bus is Christian we all agree that religion should never be used as a source of oppression. This year we are placing special emphasis on building sustainable community ties with those that are already working hard for LGBTQ justice.
We want to thank everyone who has been supporting us through donations, well-wishes, thoughts and prayers. Your support is what makes this ride and these conversations about justice for LGBTQ folks possible.
