Support The Burnette Family and Other Allies Who Are Standing Up for LGBT Equality in "Seven Straight Nights for Equal Rights"
"A few weeks ago, the Indianapolis Star featured a story about a gay couple who had been in relationship for 25 years. Tragedy struck when one of the men was away on a business trip. A stroke left him unable to make important decisions. His parents, fundamentalist Christians, were legally able to take custody of him, and did so quickly. They prevented his partner from seeing him and from making health and other decisions on his behalf. Today, this battle is still in Indiana courts because of the backward nature of Hoosier marriage regulations.
We badly need marriage reform in Indiana so that cases such as the one above never happen again. I have a four-year-old son, Marcus, who I hope will look back on such horrors as history that he can hardly believe actually happened. This is my motivation for becoming Indiana's state leader.
My faith also plays an important part in my becoming involved in LGBT marriage rights. I am a minister in the Unitarian Universalist Association. I consider myself a religious humanist, believing that every one of us holds within us what some have called a spark of the divine, a great potential for good, alongside potential for evil. I believe firmly that as consciousness is raised, progressive Indiana residents will be moved by that 'divine spark' and will call for change."
