The First Lady of This State Signed Up For Seven Straight Nights for Equal Rights

Seven Straight Nights for Equal Rights is gaining momentum. We now have 20 cities, including the addition of one this week where the State's First Lady will be leading the vigil!

Read her amazing statement below:

"I am proud to participate in Seven Straight Nights for Equal Rights. Because of our LBGT community, (state name) is stronger and better. We are at our very best as a state when we are open, inclusive, and actively dedicated to equal rights for all. I am also very proud that the Governor and I worked with organizations like Fair (state name) so that our state constitution not deny or discriminate, but rather support and apply equal rights for everyone, regardless of sexual orientation or marital status. In addition, the Governor's budget includes domestic partner benefits for all state employees, including those of the University of (state name). We have long stood up for equal rights for everyone.
I encourage all citizens to remember that our LGBT brothers and sisters and to work in our own ways, large and small, so that all citizens are guaranteed full access to precious human rights."
--First Lady of (state name)

Seven Straight Nights for Equal Rights is mobilizing Americans to get the message out that LGBT people are not alone in demanding an end to discrimination based on sexual orientation.

And discrimination certainly exists. In 34 states, lesbians and gays have no recourse if they are fired or denied promotions on the basis of sexual orientation. Twenty-nine states have no laws to address hate crimes based on sexual orientation, and 40 states do not protect their citizens against hate crimes based on gender identity. Federal statutes prohibit LGBT Americans from serving openly in the military. Same-sex couples are denied the right to-marry in all but one state and more than half of the states have embedded marriage discrimination in their state constitutions.

We need your help! Many volunteers and our small staff are working to get everything ready for the vigils in October, but the campaign has financial needs that must be met. Can you help with a tax-deductible donation today?
