The Soulforce Equality Ride is pleased to announce a series of events to be held in Philadelphia that will commemorate the launch of our 5th national tour. Special events will begin on the 26th of February and culminate in a kick-off party and sending ceremony taking place at William Way Community Center on the evening of March 3rd.

All events are open to the public. Come one, come all! If you’d like to get involved or help organize these events, please email our co-directors, Jason and Mason!

Weeklong:


Riding for Change – Celebrating 5 National Soulforce Equality Ride Tours

Feb 27 – Mar 3 – William Way Community Center – 1315 Spruce St (featured during operating hours)
A special art commemorating the history of the Soulforce Equality Ride Program and honoring the launch of the 5th national tour.

Sunday, February 26th:

Patriarchal Rites: A Multi-Gendered Approach to Masculinity
7-9pm – Moonstone Performing Arts Center – 110A South 13th St
What does it mean to be a man and where did we learn it from? This evening of poetry and monologue will join in conversation, straight/gay/queer men and trans folks of all kinds to talk about the complexities of masculinity. Sad, funny, poignant and empowering this show will feature from Philly and NYC. The cost of admission is on a sliding scale and no one will be turned away for their inability to pay. Suggested ticket cost is $10. All profits go to benefit the 2012 Equality Ride.

Monday, February 27th:

Community Potluck – Meet and greet the 2012 Equality Riders – Panel presentation by 2012 Riders
5:30-8pm – Church of the Holy Trinity/Parrish House – 1904 Walnut St
Join the 2012 Soulforce Equality Ride, a national LGBTQ social justice bus tour, for free food and conversation. Check out clips from the documentary and learn how we can change the world, one conversation at a time.

Tuesday, February 28th:

Join us upstairs for drink and food specials while supporting the Equality Ride and dancing to some good music!

Wednesday, February 29th:

2012 Soulforce Equality Ride Talent Cabaret
9-11pm – A Poet’s Art Gallery- 4510 Walnut St
This cabaret will showcase the talent of current and past Equality Ride participants. This promises to be a fun evening filled with all kinds of presentations, including: music, spoken word, comedy, and storytelling. $4 well drinks and other amazing specials! The cost of admission is on a sliding scale and no one will be turned away for their inability to pay. Suggested ticket cost is $10. All profits go to benefit the 2012 Equality Ride.

Thursday, March 1st:

“Jesus Had Two Daddies,” a ridiculously serious look at scripture – Peterson Toscano

In his newest play, comic performance artist, Peterson Toscano, explores the bizarre, quirky, and at times disturbing world of the Bible. Drawing on his skills as a character actor and his unconventional Bible scholarship, Peterson unpacks well-known and lesser known Bible stories. Believers and Non-Believers alike will welcome his hilarious and brilliantly insightful re-interpretations of ancient stories.

The creator of the plays, “Doin’ Time in the Homo No Mo Halfway House” and “I Can See Sarah Palin from my Window,” Peterson Toscano is internationally renowned for his unique brand of performance art. Subversive, smart, and so much fun, Peterson is cracking open hearts and minds.

Friday, March 2nd:

Using Nonviolence as a Leadership Model When Creating Safe Spaces – A conversation for those involved with high school and college LGBTQ groups
4-6pm – Attic Youth Center – 225 S 16th St.
Half workshop and half town hall meeting – this is an important discussion for anyone involved with a GSA, QSA or other LGBTQ group on a high school or college level. This presentation will explore how we can lead groups in relentless nonviolent resistance. We will touch on appropriate leadership methods using a nonviolent format and creative ways to present direct actions and form dialogue around ending oppression.

Saturday, March 3rd:

This is an event not to be missed! Spend an evening with the 2012 Equality Riders and then send them off on their two month journey as only Philly can! This evening will feature top notch entertainment, appetizers, drinks, networking, a silent auction featuring amazing packages and items from some of Philly’s finest venues, awards ceremonies, and a special tribute to the Equality Ride program.

The evening will start with an hour designed for communicating and networking. Folks from all of Philly’s finest organizations will be present. Eat, drink, and listen to the smooth spinning of one of Philly’s most talented DJs. At 8pm the evening shifts into a very special presentation honoring the history of the Equality Ride, the current participants, and local leaders in the LGBTQ community. Stick around after for more gab time and then participate in a touching sending ceremony designed to fill the hearts of the 2012 Riders with all of the love and acceptance Philly can muster.

This is an event you do not want to miss. Space is limited so advanced tickets are recommended. The cost of admission is on a sliding scale and no one will be turned away for their inability to pay. Suggested ticket cost is $40. All profits go to benefit the 2012 Equality Ride.
