Robert Moore

The Soulforce Equality Ride is a two month social justice bus tour that confronts political and spiritual oppression of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, and Queer (LGBTQ) people. The ride began in 2006 and has visited hundreds of cities, colleges, universities, and other institutions. The 2012 ride will be the fifth tour. This year a large emphasis is being placed on intersectional justice (or the desire to practice social justice in a way that ends all oppression against all people) and community involvement. The participants of the Equality Ride are provided top notch training, transportation, housing, and food throughout the tour. Support from rider pages like this one helps to make the Soulforce Equality Ride possible. Visit www.equalityride.com to learn more!

Robert Moore

Salt Lake City, UT

Robert grew up in a conservative multi-generational Mormon household. When his family found out that he was gay, he was kicked out and disowned. Robert took what little money and clothing he had and bought a Greyhound bus ticket to Portland, Oregon.

“My first night sleeping on the street was very cold and rainy. On my second night in an effort to try to sleep indoors out of the cold put me in a situation that ended with me being raped. A few days later I found a shelter for homeless youth. In the following months the shelter helped me find a paid internship and permanent housing. After 3 months I finally had a job, my own apartment and most importantly a safe place to sleep at night.”

Since the passage of Proposition 8 in California Robert has traveled the country fighting for Full Federal Equality.  He has shared his personal story, worked with faith groups and equality organizations, and even planned and/or participated in direct action and civil disobedience.

For the past three years Robert has also been on the Executive Committee of Affirmation: Gay & Lesbian Mormons. His focuses in Affirmation have been young adults, suicide and homelessness prevention, outreach, advocacy and membership. Robert currently serves that organization as the Assistant Vice President.

In Robert’s own words

I hope to help make a difference and Make it Better for all the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Transsexual, Queer, Intersex, Pansexual, Asexual, and so on… youth of today and all the ones to come after I have left this earth. I can’t think of a better way then by joining as a rider in Soulforce’s 2012 Equality Ride.
