I *think* this is the right forum for posting about our individual steps in activism, right?
Anyhoo - I wound up a member of a brand new HRC subgroup operating on campus out here in AZ, and our first project is planning a rally against the "protect marriage" amendment which will be voted on in November. I just successfully completed my first responsibilty, and am feeling excited about it. :D
We wanted a clergy person to speak against the amendment at our rally, and the minister who married me to my husband 3 years ago just gave an enthusiastic yes when I asked him to speak for us! :D He also hosts a weekly radio program, and he just OFFERED us free radio publicity for the rally. :weee:
Cross your fingers everyone, that everything goes smoothly with the planning and all this comes to pass. And that the initiative gets defeated at the polls!!

Zerbie: I do seem to alternate between attempts at humor, and more thoughtful postings. But I would have to agree with NowVoy, tdogg, and Jenn that you deserve something more personal. We all support your social and political activism. I see you as having a LOT of love and energy, and a little bit of insecurity, now and then. We love you, we suport you, and we all think you're doing a wonderful job.
Peace, Love, and God's Grace upon you, Chris     :agree: :agree:

Well done! This is heading where you wanted to be, you big ol' activist you. I'm sure a minister will do well bringing a change of mind to some of the listeners... that's GREAT!

This sounds incredible, exciting, and at a level that feels good for you, which helps in making a full commitment to something, I think. Small really is not a significant factor, since I think anything anyone of us do on any given day, to speak out, open up, change a mind- is significant. You go, girl- I am proud of you. Peace and love always, Vanessa:love:

Thanks for all the cheers and support. Yay!!! :D :D :D And for all the hugs.    Vanessa, ya know, when I feel like I can't do much, I remind myself that ya never know how each drop in the bucket adds up with all the others. When I'm losing motivation at tabling events and I don't wanna try anymore, I say to myself, Maybe the next person I talk to will get involved, maybe has a listserve of hundreds of people who s/he can persuade to vote our way, and if each of THOSE few hundred people tell just one other person, . . .Ya really don't know how the "ripples" spiral out there. :p

Vanessa, you gave a great update!
I'm making a new thread about our action because I mentioned it on a couple different threads.
It was such an amazing experience to be a part of. I really encourage all of you to try to join the ones nearest you. I feel like I'm really refining who I am as a person through this activism.

Well so, our rally was last night, and it went great!!!! :D
There were a lot of people in attendance and they announced that our new group, HRC@ASU, has 200 members already! And this is it's first semester!!
We've gotten a LOT of support from HRC national - they sent us Candace Gingrich to speak at our rally against Prop 107. She spoke compellingly. We also had some local speakers including the Rev. who married me to my guy 3 years ago. :) They were all great, and there was even free pizza. :D I have a NO PROP 107 tee shirt that I'm wearing almost daily, and reams of NO 107 stickers. I've started seeing other people around campus with stickers and buttons too - word is starting to get out there. Pray it's in time!
Send us your prayers, well-wishes, and if ya can afford it, your donations to our campaign - we have a real strong chance of defeating this nasty amendment.

Thanks!! :D

Zerbie,
That is great news!!! Way cool! You are such an activist - thanks for your hard work and enthusiasm - we all benefit. I need to visit your web site, just haven't had much time for computer fun at all. Haven't had much time for a lot of things.
You go girlfriend!! :rainbow: :weee: :applause:

Thanks T!!!! :D
Yes, DO go check out the website!!!
Went to the State Fair with hubby today and I thought of you because there were so many HORSES!!!!!! They even had (how does one spell this word?) Clydesdales pulling a fire engine.
We looked around for a plush horse too, but the only ones for sale were beany baby types and we wanted somebody a little larger and more elegant than that.
Re: activism - I wore my NO PROP 107 stickers and pins to the fair today, and we got into a really interesting conversation with a guy who started out in support of 107 but when we left that conversation he was nodding saying he can see both sides now, and questioning why such sweeping provisions were written into the language of the amendment. We all thought it was a cool conversation, and it was really enlightening for me as a liberal/progressive/support marriage-equality type, to hear the kinds of questions and concerns someone with a completely different outlook thinks about. Really interesting!

You got Clydesdales right (multiple - singular Clydesdale) Z, AND you have a couple of 'new' horses at home! Such great news.
What an awesome way to get the word out about Prop 107. Now, if only more people would volunteer and do that, think how many could be reached! Our upcoming elections will be interesting. Arnold's competitior Phil Angelides says he will sign the marriage equality bill, but his campaign is so invisible, it will be extremely tough for him to beat Arnold. I'm not crazy about Phil, but I agree with his stance on several issues and feel he would be a big improvement on the current gov. Time will tell on that one I guess. The main focus on the propositions are the usual billion dollar bonds.
