Tyron Garner, a petitioner in the historic lawsuit that resulted in the U.S. Supreme Court striking down sodomy laws across the country, died Sept. 11 in Houston due to complications from meningitis. He was 39.

Though the article does not state it adequately, one wonders if Garner's condition was affected by a lack of timely health care, health insurance being a key issue for over 60 million Americans.

“He didn’t have insurance and any money. By him making history, we want to get him a decent burial,” he said.

If so, shame on us by forgetting in life one who did so much for all of us.
We have lost one who did much by taking a stand against oppression and prejudice.

Remember Tyron Garner.

This is very sad news. A picture of Tyron Garner (left) and John Lawrence appears in every letter from Lambda Legal reminding people of the historic Lawrence vs. Texas U.S. Supreme Court decision on June 26, 2003. Prior to this decision, it was criminal for gays to engage in private, consensual sex. Garner and Lawrence were removed from Lawrence's apartment by police and spent the night in jail. They were fined $200 each for violating Texas's sodomy law.

I wrote this was sad news, yet if Garner's death (he didn't even reached the age of 40) is due to not having access to medical care, that is not just sad, but deeply tragic.

Half a trillion dollars (!) of taxpayer money (think of your April 15th check) will be spent on removing Hussein (who was not personally involved with the 9/11 attacks if you one of the 43% of Americans who still believe this.) How much better America would be if our collective tax money had been spent on hunger, housing, and health care.
