My name is Bill and I live in Greensboro, NC, with my partner of 10 years. We're both keenly interested in the repeal of DADT and I have recently joined the Military Equality Alliance (http://www.militaryequality.org/). I requested and have received their activist training packet and really am looking forward to offering my time.

I've been known to post on BlueNC and the DNC PartyBuilder. I've also recently submitted an article to the Gay Military Times about my military experiences which is slated to be published within a month. I'd hope that other GLBT people will come forth to tell their stories -- whether they were in the military or were flat-out denied due to DADT... or just plain-old, home-grown bigotry.

On tonight's news, I saw that SoulForce reportedly had organized a sit-in at the military recruiting office here in Greensboro. That's what led me to this site -- to make sure that I don't ever miss another opportunity to stand with those brave young folks. It was also announced that nine individuals were arrested and subsequently booked and released, but still face a court date in October. I didn't see Greensboro or Winston-Salem in the local listings -- perhaps it's new? In either case, I'd like to be a part of it.

Does anyone know if there is yet any fund to help them defray their upcoming court and defense costs? I can't in good conscience call myself a neighbor, a brother, and a friend to let them hang out to dry alone.

For now, I'm going to enjoy reading the forum. Looking forward to working with you all.

Bill

I'm not so into the military thing but I do like to keeps tabs on the goings on. -Just posted something last night (http://www.soulforce.org/forums/showthread.php?t=1086) if you haven't seen the thread yet. There are a few threads here on the Right to Serve Campaign.

It says something about sponsorship on the webpage (http://www.soulforce.org/righttoserve) though.

Anyway, welcome to Soulforce. :rainbow:

Patrick, I'm really looking forward to this part of life's journey. The welcome is much appreciated. I've been enjoying the forum threads and find a lot of kinship here. The idea of nonviolent resistance to oppression is important to me. I was so proud of those young men and women I saw on the local news last night.

Greensboro has a bit of history, well, no... a long history of folks who were willing to sit down to stand up for what is right and fair. ;) As I learn more about Soulforce, the more I see that the group's goals and mine are exactly the same, and that I share the philosophy in getting there.

Best!

I'm home with the creeping cruds and a slight fever, so I had a bit of time to google up the news coverage from last night's action in Greensboro... lo, and behold, I have the email address of one of the local organizer/participants. I've written him directly to see how I can assist and hope he'll post the full story in the Right to Serve thread.

Thanks again!
