My name is Paul. I am a senior, married, heterosexual man. I never thought I would have a reason to get on a homosexual forum. However, I have spent most of my life opposing the evil of bigotry, oppression, prejudice and discrimination. Although this form of evil has been around for a long time, it has only in the past decade come out of the closet(pardon the pun) into the public eye.
The issue of a same sex marriage ban has little or nothing to do with same sex marriage.
It is about Republicans pandering to their right wing conservative christian supporters. A minority in our society. A loud and vociferous minority, but a minority none the less.
It is about dividing our society. The Pledge of Allegience says,"One nation, indivisable, with liberty and justice for ALL."
It is about homophobia, the fear of homosexuals. No law, especially an amendment to our Contitution, should be enacted out of fear, prejudice or hatred. We are a country that is ruled by the majority and the majority will prevail. The president and his supporters in congress know that the majority will prevail and that this amendment will fail but it is a distraction a slight of hand to take our attention off the important issues and this administrations and the Republican dominated Congress' many failures.
For the last 150 years many of the amendments to our Contitution have made progress progress toward correcting errors of constitutional and institutional discrimination, bigotry and hatred. This president and some in this Congress would have us begin a trend backward into the darkness.
I was always taught that God is Love and Forgiveness. If two people love one another and have committed to share their lives together, I am sure that God would smile on such a love.
My wife and I are not threatened in any way by any form of loving commitment. Nay, we and all the world are enriched by love. We live in a world where love, no matter what form it takes should be celebrated and cherished and our society and our laws should support and defend any form of loving commitment.

Hi Paul! I, too, am quite new to this forum and am very appreciative of the warmness of welcome of the Soulforce family. It is always refreshing to see allies come out, speak out for the rights of our community and the greater human rights movement of which it is a part. Straight allies are vital for the progression of thought and state of humanity, to tear down the oppressive shrouds of not only homophobia, but also the blight of heterosexism. To "come out" as an ally is something I've found to be just as challenging for some people as it is to "come out" as gay. Thank you for coming out as our ally.

Dear Paul and Mrs Paul you are truly are awakened children of God. I tried to just find one sentence to thank you for but everything you said was from the center of understanding God. I agree whole heartedly with you, we should indeed celebrate and cherish living from the center of our hearts and from love. Even Paul who had his challenges in understanding God said "and the greatest of all is LOVE".

I have had many struggles over the years with being a lesbian, but I am always so humbled and grateful for those straight persons who feel compelled to actively be our allies. It feels empowering and moving to me. Looking forward to having you around, Peace and love, Vanessa
