To help bring more attention to the radical side of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. (and for a little fun in the forums) Soulforce is holding a contest all this week, Monday - Friday. At 8:00pm EST every day, a trivia question on Dr. King will be posted to this thread. Be the first to post the correct answer and you win your choice of the DVD Citizen King (http://www.soulforce.org/application.php?application=amazon&action=showdetails&amazon_id=2) or the CD collection A Call to Conscience (http://www.soulforce.org/application.php?application=amazon&action=showdetails&amazon_id=3) (which contains the great antiwar speech "Beyond Vietnam.")
Have fun!
Contest Rules:
You may only post one answer per question. If your answer is not correct, you cannot submit another answer for that day's question. Soulforce Staff are ineligible and you can only win once. Winners must also provide a ship-to address that Amazon.com can ship to without excessive charges.

Monday's Trivia Question
On Thursday, December 1, 1955, Rosa Parks was arrested for refusing to give up her bus seat to a white man, even though she was sitting in the black section. After her arrest, the local black community organized a one-day boycott of the city buses to take place on Monday, December 5, 1955. Following the initial success of the campaign, black leaders voted to continue the boycott. They formed a new organization and they named Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. as its president.
What was the name of the new organization and how old was Dr. King at the time he was chosen its president?

Tuesday's Trivia Question
In 1963, Dr. King spent eight days in a jail in Birmingham, Alabama, the south's most segregated city, for leading a demonstration on Good Friday. (After sit-ins and marches, city officials on April 10 had secured a state court injuction against further demonstrations, which King then disregarded.)
While in jail, King came across an open letter from eight white clergymen printed in The Birmingham News. The open letter strongly criticized the mass protests and called upon the black community in Birmingham to not support the demonstrations.
In response, Dr. King wrote the now famous "Letter From Birmingham Jail."
To win today's contest, find both the Letter From Birmingham Jail and the open letter from the eight white clergymen on the internet and post both links here. The links must be to the complete documents.

I'm not doing so well at playing game show host here. But I do have a good excuse for missing tonight's posting! Honestly!
The Soulforce staff and the board of directors are all at Mel White and Gary Nixon's home in Lynchburg. Tonight was the big final meeting. We talked about the direction Soulforce is heading and how we can issue a call to resist bad religion and how we can work to stigmatize homophobia. Very interesting stuff and I know the developments will make for some new discussions in the forums and elsewhere.
Anyway, I was in this meeting and we were all talking and I looked down and 8:00pm had come and gone.
I hope you will understand this slip and be ok with the final trivia question in this contest being posted Saturday night at 8:00pm. Good luck!

Thanks, Jamie...
Stigmatize homophobia? Hmmm...how about posters reading:
"Homophobia is intrinsically disordered"
or
"How could you hate 40% of the penguins?"
:D tj

Hey TJ,
I like your response - homophobia as a disorder :-)
Perhaps the results of homophobia need to be seen by the general public by means of newspapers, online, and other media. People could volunteer their stories & let our stories see the light of day, and metaphorically speaking, instead of hiding in the darkness of the closet.
EqualityOhio currently is working for LGBT rights & they have sent a booklet w/ LGBT stories to our legislative representatives.
Anyway, good luck SoulForce - our voices must be heard :-)

Final Trivia Question
Ladies and gentlemen, here is the final question in the MLK Jr. Day Trivia contest.
Complete the following quote from Martin Luther King, Jr.
"In the process of gaining our rightful place, we must not be guilty of wrongful deeds. Let us not seek to satisfy our thirst for freedom by drinking from the cup of bitterness and hatred. We must forever conduct our struggle on the high plane of dignity and discipline. We must not allow our creative protest to degenerate into physical violence. Again and again, we must rise to the majestic heights of meeting physical force with ____ _____."

This seems really familiar, but it's been decades since I read/studied about MLK and after an hour of searching the internet I didn't find it.
Is it, "redemptive love." ? It sounds like it should be.

What was the quote from, anyway?
King used a similiar quote several times, but this particular one was from his "I Have a Dream" speech.
