Sad news out of Pittsburgh/New York

A volatile love affair between a Moon man and his former paramour in New York ended in death for both men over the weekend, but police yesterday were still investigating the circumstances and wouldn't release much information. http://www.post-gazette.com/images/blank.gif

we'd been watching this closely. Scott and I ocassionally go to the bar mentioned in the article. We were anxious to see if it was a gay-bashing, or some other type of crime. It's very sad that it was domestic violence, but I'm thinking the gay community is relieved that it's not a hate-crime.

A hate crime would feel threatening to us, and either one could show the more observant that we have the same problems in life as Str8 people. And, as most feminists would point out, domestic violence is a hate crime. Still, sorry to hear about this happening in your neighborhood.

and I was thinking that domestic violence really is hate crime, as I was typing that. I think it does point out that it can happen for lgbt people as well as str8; of course, there will be those who make more of this than they should, and use it as evidence against us.

I think there's a feeling of relief that this was an incident between individuals, and not conflict within the community.

Maybe it's just me, but the use of the word 'paramour' in the article struck me the wrong way. It's tragic that they these two men had a domestic-abuse situation that resulted in their death. But the word I'm ranting about carries with it more than just the meaning of lover.

When was the last time you heard this word used in a way that wasn't derogatory?

I see this word used as commentary on the relationship itself. Maybe I'm too sensitive about this, but I would rather the reporter report and not get in a dig.

I sent one and cc'd it to a few others higher up in the organization. I praised them for their past coverage of the LGBT community which has indeed been honest, fair, and thorough (this was the only news outlet in PGH that was reporting that Boody had been found and giving the details of his death.) I pointed out that the word "paramour" is generally used to indicate one in an adulterous relationship, which technically is impossible for LGBT people since we aren't legally allowed to marry in either PA, or NY (where the body was found at the ex-partner's apartment.)
