Ok, we've been talking around this subject in the Brokeback Mountain thread, and the Latter Days threads. So I thought I'd start this one. What are some good gay themed movies you've seen and recommend? I've seen plenty of bad ones. here's a few I've enjoyed:

All Over the Guy
Nine Dead Gay Guys
Saved!
Testosterone

Normal
The Birdcage

The Rocky Horror Picture Show

Worth Renting

Mysterious Skin
Cowboys and Angels

I'd Almost Rather Watch Fox News than...

I like Jamie's list and would add "Maurice" which is set in Edwardian England with a very young Hugh Grant.

My List:

Angels in America
Latter Days
Mambo Italiano (a gay style "My Big Fat Greek Wedding" romantic comedy)
Touch of Pink (same as above)
Bent (deals w/ Nazi persecution of homosexuals)
A Home at the End of the World (this one is interesting)
Saved! (Loved it)
Alexander (about the most powerful gay/bi man in history)

I have found that it's really hard to find a good gay/lesbian movie with quality acting, but a one that stood out was Saving Face. Very, very good. A fun one is D.E.B.S. - a spy spoof but with two very hot women as the lead lesbian characters! ;) There is another lesbian movie coming out called Imagine Me and You, starring Piper Perabo which is a dream come true in my book! :)

I just want to add "Beautiful Thing" I really like the way the story unfolds.....and love how it ends......

Oh yes, definitely I would add Saved to my list. And I went to see Alexander, but it was just so violent that it was difficult to watch. I wanted more Alexander and Hephaistion and less human limbs and elephant trunks getting chopped off.

I would also add Kinsey to my worth renting list.

I'll have to check out some of these others you all are listing.

Besides the ones already mentioned, here are a few more: ( I guess I'm showing my age on some of these)

AIDS Related: Longtime Companions,
An Early Frost

Torch Song Trilogy
Boys in the Band
Lost Language of Cranes
Victor/Victoria

"Bent" has one of the most intense/beautiful "sex scenes" I've ever seen/heard. These two guys are in a concentration camp and are being forced to move 2 piles of rocks back and forth. They aren't allowed to touch each other.

On one of their short breaks, one of them starts to have a breakdown because he just wants to be held by his lover(the other guy), so his lover tells him to close his eyes and "talks" his way through making love to him.

"Can you feel my lips kissing your neck?"
"I'm running my hand down your back, pulling you close to me..."

It's absolutely heartbreaking and beautiful at the same time.

Hey Nathan,
I absolutely agree: that scene is beautiful & powerful.

The most recent movie I have seen with a gay theme was Alexander. It was a very moving movie.

OK, I am tired of gay life being seen as sad and unrewarding. There are plenty of gay relationships that aren't that way. Yes, life happens and so does stuff, but you know, we make the best of it and move on. Life can be good in gay relationships. Are there any gay themed movies that have a happy ending or is it just too good to be real and I am being idealistic?

But I'm a Cheerleader
Saved
Latter Days
Auntie Mame

I would agree that 'Saved' is one. Then there are 'Birdcage' and 'Rockey Horror Picture Show' which are both just flat out funny... at least I think they are! :D

Heheh. I don't always think w/ my hormones LOL :-)

However, if I did, my fav movie would be Interview with the Vampire and Meet Joe Black. The latter because of Brad's beautiful body & the former because of the near kiss between Louis & Armand. :-)

Y'know, just last night I saw Torch Song Trilogy on TV - never saw that before. I found myself predicting huge chunks of it, but even so, thought it was quite a well-scripted show, especially the dialogues between Arnold and his mother. And it's a pre-AIDS look at what being gay could be like in the 70s. I found it very interesting.

Okay, I know this one isn't a gay movie, but I think it is excellent, and if anyone in here hasn't seen it, then please do.

Hey Shep,
I love To Wong Fu...
Its excellent, funny, and delivers a good message: all people have value.
I must say Patrick Swayze pulls off a draq queen well - very well done.

I absolutely LOVE Priscilla!

I liked Priscilla better because it was kinda, well, WEIRDER and I really appreciate weird - I'm not going to try to explain. But if you liked To Wong Fu and haven't seen Priscilla, definitely go rent it. You HAVE to see Priscilla. Especially if you appreciate the artistic and the odd.

Far From Heaven with Julianne More, Dennis Quaid, Dennis Haysbert, and Patricia Clarkson is a gay themed movie. It deals with homosexuality and racism in the 1950s. It's directed by Todd Hayes and was nominated for four Academy Awards in 2003 including best actress for Julian Moore.

It's a beautifully made movie with a music score and cinematography to look as if the entire movie was actually produced in 1957.

I highly recommend Far From Heaven.

An enlightening documentary that I just watched is A Jihad For Love Sometimes when I think that we gay Christians have a hard time, I have to realize that gay Muslims face more discrimination than we do.

I Love how Patrick Swayze looks in drag. At least back when the movie was made, 15 years ago.

We also need to respect, if not admire our cultural antecedents, like "The Children's Hour"

You guys! You guys! You have GOT to see this movie!

It is called Prayers for Bobby! Heard of it?

It is about a young gay teenager who is born into an extremely misguided religious family. It is about the persecution that many homosexuals face, and it is also about homosexual suicide. It is heart-wrenching, but the message is powerful!

Show it to all of your Christian friends who still think homosexuality is a sin.

You can watch it here:

What did you think of it?

This is the movie that changed my life. I used to be one of the most adamant debaters against homosexual marraige. I wish to spend the rest of my life repenting of my sins.

God bless.

Saw it on Utube a few weeks after it came out on the Lifetime channel some months ago. And I remember reading the book when it came out in 1991. Bobby would be a little young than me had he lived.

Seeing the movie brought back a lot of painful memories: being at a Christian College where half the guys in the Concert Choir were gay; friends weeping during altar calls because they despaired at being attracted to other guys; 4 of my classmates being thrown out of school right before their graduation for being seen in the parking lot of a gay bar.

I got through that time by shutting down my sexuality completely. It wasn't fun. It's wasn't good. It was hell. How many Bobbie's are killing themselves today? That's what I wonder about sometimes. Still happens.

Now what's this about repenting of your sins? Being sorry is one thing. But after awhile there are better things to do. ;) Like LIVE! Joyously and radiantly.

And the eyes of the blind shall be opened. And the ears of the deaf shall be unstopped.
