Is amazing! O my goodness gracious! Of all the shows on broadway... The Color Purple is the best. Not only is it two hours of gospel singing in an all African American cast with amazingly outrageous soul voices, but the main charecter is a lesbian! Yes, she is! It is a wonderful story about a young girl who grows up being told that she is ugly and worth nothing, and that she should only have to work and work; the story is her journey to discover how she really is beautiful. It is a powerful story dealing with GLBT rights and Christianity, as well as African American rights. I give it three thumbs and two and a half fingers up. Amazing. Go see it!

Glad to hear such a rave review of the musical - is certainly has excellent theater potential. Sounds like it lives up to it.

Oprah was in the movie? I thought I remembered Whoopi Goldberg - maybe they both were? There were several principal female characters as I recall. Excellent book, great movie. Sounds like a great musical, too.

And it was on this weekend. I am such a movie buff, and I was thinking over the weekend about moments in movies that I love the most. The ending of the Color Purple, in the movie, is one of my favorite film moments of all time. Nettie and Celie, sisters, are reunited after being separated for probably thirty years. Celie also meets her two children that she has not seen since they were born. Absolutely overwhelming. Danny Glover, Whoopi, Oprah, and Laurence Fishburne, were all in it. Other actors and actresses that I recognize by face but not name as well. Oprah gave the performance of her life. If you have never seen the movie, see it. It does have a lesbian relationship part of the story in it, but that is really not the main theme. The main theme is about finding out who you are and standing up for yourself, against all odds. Peace all, Vanessa

Vanessa, I agree with you on the ending of The Color Purple! Not only about my all-time favorite movie, outstanding cast, totally got ripped at the Oscars (ok, my personal pet peeve...but...true...) - but that ending requires
AT LEAST a 1/2 box (large sized) of tissue. Wow. Amazingly emotional.

What a movie, what a message, what a script, what a cast, what emotions. The Color Purple (movie) is nothing less than perfection. It would be interesting to see the play.

I was going to add, another top emotional movie experience:

The scene from Schindler's List, where Liam Neeson is in absolute shambles when he thinks about how many others he could have saved. I cry like a miserable baby. Takes the other 1/2 of the large tissue box.

Now, before i start crying over thinking about those two flix - I better get out in my backyard and set up my birdfeeding station. It's cold, they are hungry and the day is not yet over.

I had no idea that The Color Purple was turned into a musical. It's a brilliant story--I cannot even imagine how amazing it had to be to see a live performance. Lucky lucky you! :p
