On superhippy's thread about coming out I told a story about Sverker Åstrom, a 90 year old gay man who was a Swedish Diplomat and came "out" publicly 2 years ago, although he said the Swedish media knew about it for 50 years but didn't write about it.

The Swedish Press asked him what is the secret to his long and health life. He said it was genes and healthy living. He hadn't smoked since he was 16. He eats very little. He never drinks more than a glass of wine. When he went to receptions, he would arrive early so the hosts would see him, target 3 people to connect with, stay 15 minutes, and then leave though a back entrance so he didnt have to say good-bye to the host.

Sweden has same-sex partnerships and it is also against the law to publicly preach against homosexuals. When I was there the summer of 2005, during Stockholm Pride Week, it wasn't a Sodom and Gohmorra that fundies imply. The people I met were more reserved, looking for serious relationships, or in one. I think society is better with marriage or partnerships than without it.

Does anyone else have articles on what contributes to a long and healthy life?

I heard about ten years ago that people decide how long they're going to live quite early in life, based on their perception of what old means. I'm sorry that I don't remember the source.

I decided then and there that I was going to go to 97.

Several years ago, when I was about 40, I was thinking about living to 140.

Hahah!! I was always terrified that I would live to be 93! I really don't want to hang around that long, but does this mean the choice has already been made?

(kinda like that scene in Ghostbusters where they are supposed to choose the form of their destruction, you know...and one of them thinks of the StayPuff Marshmallow Man)

Ugh!!! 93!

Just in case I DO end up living so dang long, I intend to read like a fiend...cuz the brain is like a muscle and I don't want it to get flabby. :reading: I never ever want to retire. Frank Lloyd Wright was in his 90's still clambering around construction sites. I wanna be like that...

...but only if I can't get an earlier bus ticket outta this crazy joint!

:running:

My grandmother lived to be 96 and a great uncle on the other side of the family was my first doctor- he was 93 at the time and near blind, but not deaf! Makes me wonder what life has in store for me.

I can imagine myself the grand singing master at such an age- all steely-eyed- full of two parts oil and one part vinegar, a dash of mustard and honey thrown in for good measure. The more spicy the better.

Why are you slumping young man? Eh!? This is a noble art!

Now again- from the beginning!
