Hey folks,
I'm soon going to be writing an advice column for a local college. The subtitle to the article will be "Advice from a progressive Christian perspective."

I would GREATLY appreciate any ideas you may have for the name of the column.

People will write in with questions about relationships, work, personal issues, etc. I hope to promote the truly Christian ethics of integrity, responsibility and, of course, love.

Let me know what you think!

Thank you so much!

Nate

A progressive Christian advice column sounds wonderful. Just don't call it Straight Talk with Nate Black.

but how about something from Galations -- something that touches on freedom or something from 1 john that touces on Love. OR to steal from the student paper at my seminary years ago... "Balaam's Ass"

This is awesome... :)

I like using "cross"... I also like the word "sentience," but I'm not sure if most people will know what it means.

A Cross Reference

Advice from a progressive Christian perspective

but drop the indefinite article and go with just "Cross Reference"

Credit where credit due, it's a rich tapestry... but I can name that advice column in two syllables. How 'bout:

"Ask Nate"

Or the secular version:

"Go Ask Nate"

Now I realize that last one was three syllables long, and I'm having a bit of fun with the delivery on this, but the idea is that if the pressure of naming your column gets too tough, you can always fall back on the tried and true plain old simple ideas like 'Ask Nate'©. (or something similar, 'Ask Nate'© is taken.) ()

Update:

My advice column will be titled "Take My Advice" and my pen name for it will be M.A. (The paper staff wanted it to appeal to all kinds of people and they wanted it to be anonymously written.) I'll post the links to the column as soon as it's published. :)

Also, I'll be writing a "progressive christian" column which will be like an editorial on current events. Still working on a title!

The progressive Christian column is titled:

Reclaiming Faith
Important issues addressed from a progressive Christian point-of-view.

Here is the first article.

That was wonderful. You blended your own experiences, beliefs, and objectives for writing the column in a very palatable reader friendly balance. You gave us a sense of who you are, why you think the way you think, and why we need to care enough to keep reading.

I thought your examples of the misuse of faith were particularly wise and elegantly stated. Your story of coming out both sexually and religiously were extremely well told too. I think most straight people reading that would be able to identify with the fear of not living up the expectations of those they love, though few will ever know the same degree of hardship and rejection that many if not most gay children have every reason to fear. I know that you know that you are one of the lucky ones in that regard and am sure you have heard some of the real horror stories.

By the way I thought 'cross reference' was terribly clever. I hope someone uses that. What you settled on 'reclaiming faith' is just perfect for what you are doing though. Good luck and much inspiration for this fine endeavor. I think you will give a lot of people hope and will broaden some narrow minds, doing a lot of people who'll never see your column a lot of good in the bargain.

Love, Donna
