I am Joe Allen Doty and I live in Tulsa, Oklahoma.
I first met Mel White in N. Hollywood at church but I did not know him very well. In fact, I did not know he was the one who wrote "Stranger at the Gate" before I read what was in the book. When he wrote about going to the MCC Valley in N. Hollywood, my memory of his face came back and it matched his pics in the book.
But, somehow, in 1998, Mel proved he knew more about me than I thought he did when he was the key note speaker at a PFLAG dinner here in Tulsa. He wrote that I was his "old friend" in my copy of his book.
A MySpace friend who went to Oral Roberts University after I did graduate theology work there is a member of this forum, too.
I will post more about myself in the future.

You are the reason that I found this forum, Nate! I read your MySpace Bulletin which gave link to the Forum.

Well, Nate's MySpace bulletins which appear on my MySpace home page keep me informed of many things. and sometimes his posted links in his bulletins have other links or webpages that are useful to me, too.
Thanks for the welcome, Daniel. I learned about Soulfource years ago. And I have a special place in my heart for Mel, too. I just wish that I had gotten to know him better when we attended the same church in N. Hollywood.
Mel told me personally that since I am on fixed income, I did not need to worry about helping out financially and my prayers were needed just as much. Now, I will be getting daily reminders to pray.
When the Soulforce folks came to Tulsa last year, I would have joined them across the street from Oral Roberts University if I had not had a previous appointment that day. I would have pointed out to the news media the Tulsa Police Officer (who was with the other cops) who claims to be a Christian and is homophobic and yet gets a thrill to follow individual men into public restrooms to entrap them so that he can arrest them. He and another vice cop tried to do that to me and they had no luck, I ignored them; but, I did not know until about 30 minutes later they were cops. That's when they did arrest a man.
When things are slow in MySpace Groups (I own 3 of them) and in the Yahoo Groups (I own 9 of them) and I belong to many groups in both of them, I will see what kind of stuff I can "stir up" here in the Soulforce Forums.
