Hi everyone! My name is Katrina, and I'm a high school (almost college) student in upstate NY. My question is what I can do at an activist's level virtually from home- this comes up because even though I am quite an activist for LGBT rights and a good public speaker, I am usually stuck at home because I cannot drive and because of a chronic illness (Crohn's Disease) that keeps me here a lot of the time.

So. What can I do? I am into writing letters and am planning to write to universities that do not admit gay, lesbian, bisexual and trans students, such as those on the Soulforce Ride (so if you can think of some good stuff to put in the letters let me know). Thanks!

Hi Katrina,
Here are some suggestions for new activists.

Create a blog and update it daily, if possible.
Get to know your local lgbt organizations, make phone calls, send emails, etc.
Get to know your local government. Write a letter to your city, county & state leaders. Use email.
Get to know your US Representatives and Senators. Be in regular communication with them.
Get to know ALL of the local media. Radio, TV, Newspapers, Magazines, Websites, etc. Once every couple of weeks, send a press release about a news item you have discovered. Also, contact the editors at these organizations. Do some research on how to write good "letters to the editor" and get in the habit of doing it often.
Create a myspace account. Let your friends know about your activities, news items, events, and video that you discover.Have fun!
