the passages from the Bible listing all things considered an abomination? I would like to see them but I can't find them anywhere... help? Please?

Leviticus chapter 11 - things that you eat.
Leviticus chapter 18 - sexuality (remember the literal translation of 18:22 is "you shall not lie with a male on a wife's beds".)
Leviticus chapter 20 - various things for which you should be put to death (literal translation of 20:13 is same as 18:22).

That should give you some uplifting bedtime reading. Hope you don't gat nightmares. There are some others, but they pale when compared to this list.

Austin,

You need a computer Bible program. It would allow you to do quick searches on specific words in more than one translation as well as to do simple word studies in Greek and Hebrew (not a substitute for learning the languages but still a useful tool). I use Quickverse which I have liked a lot (though recent upgrades and versions have gotten overly complex and haven't really been an improvement). Andy may have one he likes better. They aren't that expensive (less than $100)

how does that compare to sites like biblegateway.com ? could Austin get decent results (as a layperson) with that site?

BibleGateway.com (http://www.biblegateway.com/) is pretty good, I'd play around with that first. There's a search feature and you can switch between quite a few Bible versions for any given text.

For abomination I got 8 results with the New International Version (http://www.biblegateway.com/quicksearch/?quicksearch=abomination&qs_version=31) and 25 with the King James Version (http://www.biblegateway.com/keyword/?search=abomination&version1=9&searchtype=all&limit=none&wholewordsonly=no) (note: I had to click on "more results" to see more than the first 10 listings). Each brought up different passages, and didn't even include this important one:

Proverbs 6:16-19 (http://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Proverbs%206:16-19;&version=9;) (King James Version):

16 These six things doth the LORD hate: yea, seven are an abomination unto him:

17 A proud look, a lying tongue, and hands that shed innocent blood,

18 An heart that deviseth wicked imaginations, feet that be swift in running to mischief,

19 A false witness that speaketh lies, and he that soweth discord among brethren. The NIV tends to use the word detestable in places where the KJV uses abomination. Those are the only two I usually use, depending on which phrasology I'm looking for.

It has a conservative bias. They have 50 quazillion translations but NOT my favorite (the New Revised Standard Version) presumably because the translators (well known commie pinko fags like Bruce Metzger and George Landis -- you have to know those two to know how far my tongue is burrowed into my cheek  ) decided to use inclusive language in those cases where the undisputed meaning of the text includes both men and women  (heaven forbid that we should include women in the promises of the bible any more often than necessary!)

But You are right Keltic, Biblegateway is a good place for Austin to explore the riches of a cyberbible.

Almost sounds magical, at least in the sense that you portray it.

Do you really think the New Revised Standard Version is a superior interpretation (or however you might term it)?

Would you want to convince me to buy one? Should I buy one?

Keys in hand, I'm ready...

as a religious studies minor in college, way back in the dark ages (1980's), the NRSV was the bible we were required to use for all of our classes.

I realize you asked u-dog, but seeing as how he is old and infirm, I'd like to give my recommendation.

I don't think any translation is perfect, but the NRSV is certainly more inclusive than most others - it is my preferred version also. It still tips its hat considerably to traditional interpretations, but is more inclusive when it comes to gender. I would recommend an NRSV Study Bible, as it has decent discussion of some suspect passages.

The New Oxford annotated study bible -- NRSV

I usually recommend either the NIV or the NRSV in terms of reliability, but the NRSV has the advantage of using language that is more inclusive of both genders.
