I had something get cancelled today so I'm home, cleaning up, researching, and hanging around the forum. About an hour ago I decide to take a walk down the block, and outside a few houses down from me, something glides across my path, over the sidewalk, and paces up and down the neighbors' driveway. It's a roadrunner.
I had NO idea roadrunners lived in the suburbs!!
They are BEAUTIFUL birds! Omigoodness! It made my day!
Ever go outside and see some living creature, like trees or a bird or something, and it's just so exciting to get away from all the artificiality and just appreciate all the amazing creatures who live in this world? It was one of those moments. I thought I would share.

Zerb, you post something like this, and you are always talking about your zillion stuffed animals, and yet I have never heard you mention having a pet. Do you have one, and if not, why not????? (I'm going to get one, or two, as soon as my housing situation changes)
Peace and Love, Bruce Chris

Hi Chris,
You're right. No pets.
With our lifestyle, we cannot devote the proper attention to a pet. Hubby is almost never home, and I sometimes have whole days home, but not with any regularity. Plus, we often travel for weeks at a time. DH found having a cat conducive to his lifestyle, as his cat took care of herself. But I am beyond allergic to cats - I get sick in houses where cats have BEEN, even if they've been absent for 6 months and the house has been cleaned with a HEPA filter vacuum.
We thought about a dog OR a rabbit. Of course I would want the bunny. :) But bunnies in particular require a lot of attention.
Then I wanted fish, but my husband says "Fish are not pets. They are decorations that you have to feed." He was adamant about not investing in fish.
Growing up I always had tropical fish. We also had a large white dog of unknown mixed-breeds, and I had a sweet yellow canary for a few years, til he suddenly died of a cold.
Hubby is both a cat and a dog person. Well, he's an animal person. He's had many pets over the years. Animals magnetize to him.

Meep, meep (are you impressed with my roadrunner impersonation?)
I love animals too, but also don't have any pets ... but I just had to let Zerbie know that I also have quite a few stuffed animals ... not as many as in the famous Zerbie collection, but way more than most adults would have.
One of my stuffed animals is a lizard named after Eddie Izzard ... my hero, the British comedian, actor, and proud cross-dresser ... and co-star of FX's new program The Riches ... a great program, by the way! : )

Meee Meeeeep!!!
Good Roadrunner voice Sherrie. :D See, I can do it too.
We have a lizard too! His name is Louis. I gave him to my husband right before he (my husband, not the lizard :D ) proposed to me. :p

Thanks, Zerbie! And your roadrunner voice is excellent ... wink wink
And how cool about the lizard! Was the lizard a stuffed toy, or alive in the usual sense? (Of course we know that stuffed animals are alive too, but in a different sense)
One of my sisters is in the House Rabbit Society (organization for pet rabbit owners/guardians) ... yay, bunnies! : )

No no. Our lizard, like all the others, is a 'magic' lizard who lives inside a body made of foam and plush stuff.

Roadrunners are SOOOOOO cool!!! See, Z, you are a birdwatcher and don't even know it!
I know what you mean about seeing something, birds, flowers, anything, that makes you appreciate nature. Unless one actually gets outside and begins to really see birds, as opposed to 'looking', one can never truly know or appreciate the incredible variety of the birds around us. That goes for all of nature.
I'm SO fortunate to live close to the sea. A two hour drive and I can be on the beach or ocean cliffs, smelling the sea and salt, hearing the waves crash as the sun beams overhead, ,listening to the sound of gulls and oystercatchers, watching the abdundant bird and sea life in action, admiring the beautiful coastal wildflowers in bloom. Amazing stuff.
So happy you got to enjoy the roadrunner!

Zerbie: I'm in full agreement that stuffed animals are magic : )
Now I'm curious ... what kind of animal is that in your avatar?

I think it's a ferret?? The website where I made the cartoon picture of myself didn't have any bunnies. As I recall, choice was either a ferret or a cat, or nothing. I thought the ferret looked like a rabbit without ears, and they DID have the ears available as a headdress for your face, so I went with the ferret in my arms and the ears on MY head.
Now, someone is going to ask me what website that was, so I'll tell you in advance that I can't remember. Sorry.
Chris, hubby insists that I'm a rabbit. Part of that is my passion for leafy green vegetables and carrots, part of that is my sense of fealty to rabbit-kind. Anyway, you got me pretty well figgered out. :award:

I don't have pets now, but did. when my mother died, I couldn't afford to keep my dog,Goofy.. But my brother offered to keep her and she now has a new mom and a child and another dog to play with. When I talk to my brother he always jokes about Goofy but she is now a welcome addition to their home.. That dog was hysterical.. Sometimes when I would walk her I'd let her loose in the fields near our apartments, she is a mini daschund...She would actually leap and hop through the high grass like a bunny rabbit. I have numerous anecdotes on animals and they are hilarious...None of the animals I ever had were tame or placid they definitely had their own personality.
When I first got Goofy from the pound, she was pretty timid, but she blosomed from a somewhat antisocial personality( Basically afraid of other people, she'd also attack bigger dogs for no reason)to a little social butterfly where she would run up to people and wag her tail, she became alot more friendly with kids ... She never quite got used to bigger dogs but would settle down if I reassured her I wouldn't let them harm her.
One incident is when I wnt over to my ex's and she has a huge labador named Sugar. Sugar would slowly approach Goofy and Goofy would have a hysterical fit, actually shaking and carrying on, Sugar would just lick her nose, lol I guess Sug sensed Goofy was afraid and was trying to reassure her but I thought that was too cute...Animals are too wonderful.

Does anyone remember the story of Charlotte's web? I remember the story being read to our class by a teacher and I was absolutely captivated by that story about that little spider and the other animals... Hope I'm not changing the subject but I just wanted to share that... I've just always seemed to gravitate toward animals and nature..:)

Speaking of pets.....here's a photo of my three dogs; Gomer, Buford, and Goober. They love sitting on the porch all day watching traffic go by.
