These are my comments and these are not meant to attack or criticize people who study the bible... but it is my feeling after reading the bible , though not cover to cover and reading about alternate spirituality and even on the history of the bible, my conclusion is the bible is not the infallible ,inerrant word of God... Yes it contains inspiration, beauty, and certain truths in many passages but we must not overlook the parts of the bible which inspired violence among other things...(usually in the old testament) When we are dealing with the historical perspective of the bible , we are dealing with just that ,a historical perspective... we know the ancient hebrews had certain customs and practices we would not adhere to today. Why? Because it would not make sense today... It is said that in the old testament that God approved of the ancient hebrews taking slaves...stoning children if they did not obey their parents... why wouldn't we follow these customs today because they would not make sense today from our now understanding of things.. many of the rituals and ideas of the old new testament had to do with human consciousness at the time, the culture, the times , the customs, civilization and other factors.. they were less evolved in their understanding.

But the problem and danger is that people believe that the bible is the absolute truth and authority on all matters... and when a new spiritual teaching or alternatives comes along , they automatically discredit it because their belief is firmly tied to the bible and it's explanations.

Again, the bible has been translated many times and in many languages, and it is possible that much of the original meanings may have been lost in the translations.. A word two thousand years ago , may have meant something totally different than it does today. The danger also is that too many times people have interpreted the bible to justify their prejudices , fears and hatred of others.. we've seem this in past history in the inquisitions, witch burnings among other things... we must also understand as well, that even in the bible people have changed their minds about certain ideas and thinking that was stated in previous scripture, for example, the sins of the fathers shall be visited on the children and future generations, changed to ,everyone is responsible for their own sin.... so in the bible there had been a progression of change and reform of older ideals and thinking..and belief systems

Let's take the old testaments views on the sabbath, that people who worked on the sabbath would be stoned to death... and to the teachings of Jesus , who often broke the old sabbath rules... another progressive change from the old to the new...can this still be going on today, yes, because we are more advanced in our understanding of things, than those of ancient history who followed certain superstitions and tribal mentality... we are a progress in work... can there be new revelations, yes, because God is constantly reaching out toward man to help him .

Should we evolve, if we don't then we are stuck in the old mentalities of the past which do not pertain to the present moment or present day civilzation...Think about it, would you follow old tribal customs and mandates like the ones above that I mentioned? Stone your children? Put to death people who didn't work on the sabbath. If these were the irrefutable absolute ideas and mandates of God then why would they have changed through other means.. If God really meant to have people stoned to death on the sabbath, why then would this had not pertained to Jesus who was often criticized by the pharisees for doing just that... He and his disciples were harvesting grain on the sabbath day and were criticized by the pharisees for "working" on the sabbath" Jesus quoted the scripture about David and his men and said he the son of man was even Lord over the sabbath

Were these old laws and ordinances moral absolutes, obviously not, otherwise Jesus would have held to the letter of the law without deviation... something to think about.... As I said we also see how the new testament contrasts with the old testament.. why is there this contrast, the evolution of the consciousness of man.. Paul even said when he was a child he spoke and thought as a child but now that he was a man , he put away those childish things... It's like saying we are not on the same level of understanding that we were when we were kids, we no longer think in the same ways we used to. WE are no longer in kindergarten , or first grade, we moved on to hopefully to more maturity and a better understanding of things then when we were children.. the same applies to the bible.

I am going to quote certain biblical scripture to make some points about the contrast of the old and new.. "If anyone is in Christ, he becomes a new creation ,old things have passed away and all things become new.." "Do not be conformed to this world but be renewed in the spirit of your minds "...as well as ."Even to this day in the reading of the old testament a veil lies over their minds and heart and they are blinded ...and they do not understand, but that veil is taken away in Christ ... and where the spirit of the Lord is there is freedom."
Think about these passages, and what they explain , a renewal , a progression from the old to the new...... we are not stuck in the historical perspective of the old testament, nor the mindset because as the bible says we have moved on to a newer perspective or understanding of things....We are no longer bound by that old order... we are in the constant state of renewal.. rather than being bound by the old traditions and thinking of the old

I'm going to post this as I think it will help many people who may be wavering or unsure of themselves when they are being told what to believe by others. Tese are not my writings ,so I cannpt take credit for them.. but I hope they will help people in their own faith as well.
The Bible teaches that Jesus is God in human form, that He became a man and that He, himself hung on a cross in flesh for the salvation of the world. Why does the Urantia book deny this, and what then are we to believe? One says one thing, the other says another thing. Please explain.
Actually, to be accurate, The Urantia Book doesn't deny the Biblical teachings as you've suggested. It does, however, provide a different interpretation for these events than what is given in the Bible. Why is that? Why did Protestants split off from the Catholic Church? Why did the Catholic Church split from Judaism? Why did Judaism evolve from the Hebrew religion? This is an evolutionary world. Rocks evolve, plant and animal life evolves, human beings, human societies, institutions, philosophies, and religions evolve. God's word evolves.

What are we to believe? The Urantia Book relates that God expects us to believe that which makes the highest and best sense to us, without reliance upon what others around us seem to believe. So, which believers does God love more? God loves us all equally, accepts our shortcomings, errors, inconsistencies, and ignorance. Belief is a personal experience, a pact made between the believer and God. That's why I believe what I do and you believe what you do and why, most likely, no two people in the world believe exactly the same.

Some believers are content to believe what they're told to believe. Some choose to believe because of tradition, some because of what their parents believed. And some believers take an active role in developing their own beliefs through discussion, reading, introspection, and prayer, using their minds more actively in developing beliefs through logical processes — whether it's belief in the old or the new, the Old or the New Testament, the Quran, Harry Potter, The Urantia Book. How is one assured that what they've read in the Bible is more accurate and true than what they've read in The Urantia Book or some other source? Whichever more fully resonates with your sense for the truth, whichever makes the most logical sense, whichever brings the most peace and comfort and insight — that's what should guide your decisions in what to believe.

I tend to read about alternative spiritualities to gain more of a perspective on things.. while I don't acknowledge anything as the final authority or absolute truth under all cases. I like to expose my mind to new ideas... here is an interesting article..http://www.urantia.org/papers/paper89.html I like to be better educated on the varying perspectives and many of them can be valid.. and of course there are those which would not be..I've read parts of the Urantia book, and while certain things about it make sense to me, some of the ideas seem different or alien to what I am accustomed to thinking..

However from what I see of the site and the spiritual chatroom ,the people are overall positive and seem to have an overall positive idea of God and man. I will say they have positive ideas on child rearing , and family that don't conform to conventional ideas of childrearing, they don't seem harsh or judgmental and show great affection and devotion to their families.. They seem to promote healthy attitudes about sexuality among other things... They are definitely not of the fundamentalist view.

Of course as with any spiritual teaching keep an open mind, they will not dictate to you or tell you what you have to do or have to believe and encourage thinking, asking questions and discussion. Thye do not claim to be the ultimate or absolute authority on truth and seem open to other spiritual teachings or ideas..Thye encourage you to find what reasonates within you as to finding the truth and do not condemn the bible or other religions.

They've answered some of my personal questions in a very positive and helpful manner and they don't seem to be dogmatic.. Again I will say the site does not push it's views or ideas downanyone's throat, it is like a come and see for yourself attitude.. As I said i tend to read about different ideas about different spiritaulities, and even though trying to keep an open mind don't necessarily agree with them 100%. To say the least the Urantia book is very imaginative.. definitely not pushy or intimidating or authoritarian.
