Yes, I hate grades! Even when they are good... they just have far to much control over you.... it's not right. I definately think that you shouldn't ever be able to see your grades you just get what you get... all they do is freak you out and cause to put to much pressure on you....:o

I like grades. they help me see if my teaching strategies are effective. Perhaps the method I'm using isn't working with a particular student, I can monitor and adjust by looking at how well a student is doing on a particular assignment. Testing and grading can be a wonderful thing!

Jennifer,
Grades, evil you say? (Wicked cartoon character laugh). You act like grades are some scheme that we teachers have put together to make people's lives miserable. You've got to realize that we teachers didn't join that profession out of the love we have for our students. We did it to get revenge. Teachers made my life miserable, now I get to do it! I love this job. (another evil laugh)
Actually, I would be willing to get rid of them (the grades, not the teachers). Learning does work better in a lower stress environment. Just what do you do with those students who won't put forth effort unless they get a grade?
Now sit down and get back to work or I'll take off 5%.

YOU take out your ruler and you raise it high over your head and bring it down sharply on the palms of their parents' hands!!!
It is parents who introduce the whole stupid exterior rewards and punishments schema into kids minds rather than introducing them to the joy of learning.

Alright, I agree that grades can be good because they can help the teachers better determine how to do things... but this is a slightly different situation. The grades are not used to help them see what they're may be doing right or wrong.... these are online classes, there stiff, you do the work and either you get it or you don't. It takes weeks to hear back from teachers a lot of the time, and I honestly think that they are far more overloaded then the students... but that doesn't seem to matter... in this case, I don't really think it's a good situation for anyone.
I have been a teacher for many years. Now I assess teachers for the state. The system is flawed but on the whole education, available for everyone, is one of the good things about our society. Granted the quality of education or different socio economic levels is an issue to tangle with. But education for all sets us apart in a good way.
Grades are a measurement, an evaluation, a way to gauge the success of a lesson. Evaluation is supposed to be used to create future lessons and help the students. But as you know to often they turn into something else; something very ugly.
Considering that we do need an evaluation, an assessment, a way to gauge and a way to improve future lessons, a system has to be in place.
I am sorry this is so stressing.
Peace and prayers

wow... just how many teachers are on here??? I didn't realize just how many of you there were...
...now where are the rest of the students??? I suppose the truth probably is that I just don't have the best out look on this because I don't like the program in general

I've been a student most of my life (sounds like an introduction at a 12-step meeting :D ) and I've come to loathe grades. I have to confess, though, that 99% of their evilness comes from inside of me. They engage my competitive spirit more than could be emotionally or relationally healthy for anyone.
I'm working hard on finding more satisfaction in the quality of my work according to my own standards than my professors'.
