Please read this story of a gay nfl football player then comment on how long it will be before active football, baseball and basketball players will able to come out of the closet. I know many players have come out after their careers. However, it seems that it is still too threatening to be openly gay while being an active player.

Being totally sports illiterate I can't begin to guess the answer to your question, Brian. It will be sometime after the FIRST guy dares to say "I'm gay" while still playing. Rick's article about the sports writer admitting that he is Transgender might suggest that the time is coming sooner than we think.

What the f*** does the word "Sissy" mean when it is applied to a 300 pound Samoan, NFL Linebacker? I mean, I know what it meant when it was applied to my friend Johnny in Jr high (and it was true in EVERY sense of the word  ) but with this guy? What could it mean other than "not like us" or "other" or "different"

Here is another NPR piece from 2005 that deals with the same issue:

Youngtopper, this might be a book that would be helpful to you as you sort through some of the questions you posed in other thread yesterday!
