this (http://fstdt.com/fundies/comments.aspx?id=25916) has to be illegal! I can see no way that this could be tolerated.

" I have no suggestions on what the Cheneys should do in this situation, but I can tell you what I did.

I have a gay daughter and have been loving and accepting of her and her partner, but not of their lifestyle. We have made clear our opinions, but my wife and I do not make life uncomfortable for them because of our opinions.

When they announced that they were going to try and get pregnant, we sat them down and explained our position. We explained why we believed that children should have a mother and a father and told them that, should they go though with this, we would sue for custody of our grandchild. We assured them that living in the South that we had a better than even chance of winning.

Though they were not happy with our decision, they still visited and were welcomed and we have always been welcomed at their home. They thought of moving elsewhere but didn't like any of the places with more liberal laws. (A lesson in how liberalism ruins a place) It has now been eight years and still no babies.

Check the link: it has double "http//" in it.

The scenario presented on the webpage reminds me...don't parents ever think, "Hey...I'm gonna be elderly and frail someday! Maybe I should treat my children nice so they aren't mean to me when I need someone to depend on."

(not suggesting people treat their mean ol' parents badly, just sayin...)

I have ALWAYS said this same thing with regard to child abuse. In addition to it being evil, immoral, monstrous, unconscionable... its also REALLY DUMB. these are the people who will be choosing your nursing home! Hello?

The old saying is: "Be nice to your children, they'll choose your nursing home." or, more globally, "What comes around goes around." Don't want to be these people when it "goes around."

I think the parents may be right, only in the sense that the courts COULD probably rule in their favor. However, I seriously doubt that any court WOULD do so, unless there were evidence of abuse or neglect in the birth family. But the threat may have worked.

I wonder if these "Christian" parents gave any thought to the Biblical injunction against solving your disputes with other Christians in secular courts? They seem to take other injunctions pretty literally and seriously, why not that one?

Wow. This type of situation I'm sure is quite common. My partner and I been discussing the posibility of adopting a child. I'm sure some in my family would be absolutely horrified, although I doubt they would try to take the child away (he or she would be 'tainted').

My first thought was, if this were me and my parents, I would immediately have 10 kids. Thank God I rarely act on my first impulse. I also have God to thank that this is no longer physically possible for me! ;)

T-dogg, I can tell you from experience that its nearly impossible to have 10 kids "on impulse" You get plenty of time in between to think it through

As someone who has 2, I can say that 32 is either grounds for sainthood or permanent institutionalization.

It's next to impossible for grandparents to sue for custody simply because they don't agree with the decisions their children are making. While this particular grandparent feels he might have some sway because he lives in a more conservative part of the country, he is likely going to be disappointed. Even if a judge granted him custody, I can almost guarantee the ruling would be overturned. (Unless, of course, the theocrats get their way.)

Grandparents' rights are virtually non-existent in this country, and in cases like this, rightly so. Just imagine if grandparents could sue for custody each time they disagree with the parents' choices for their grandchildren! Our court system would be flooded (more than it already is) with cases. What is a shame, though, is when in cases of divorce, loving grandparents are often denied visits with their grandchildren by the ex-spouse who has custody.

Absent a showing of negligence or otherwise unfit parenting, this grandpa (thankfully) will be out of luck. It's too bad he can't get over his bigotry long enough to consider loving his potential grandchild.

Hey, you're gonna ruin some perfectly good stereotypes by suggesting that homosexual is only part of your life! Let's be more careful to fit the mold, ok? [sarcasm drips]

This couple made a mistake in just believing the parents instead of consulting a lawyer. I'd be very surprised to hear that grandparents succeeded in getting custody for this reason in any US state.

I feel for you and your situtation. We all seek unconditional love from our parents. We always hope they support a decision like this. But you have to remember they are from a very different generation, time and place.
Very few of us parents are able to accept the choices our kids make.
My son's father will no loger speak to him or visit. He has never told any of his 10 siblings of our son's marriage and birth of his daughter.....why.....he married outside his race. Such a little thing to lose a child forever as if dead. I love my grand daugher. I love her mom just as I love my son.
Just as I love my sis.
we all are who we are.....we have to accept ourselves first....then let those who will accept us are friends...those who do not accept us...who cares....they are not worth being our friends nor a worry to carry over our heads.
So maybe over time your parents will be able to move more to a positive postion on a baby. If you still decide to have one, go for it. If the baby can't melt a heart nothing will.
Good luck.

A friend of mine is in a relationship with an older lady, she has a daughter and was previously married to a man. The guy basically said when he found out she was pregnant, he didn't want it and handed her the divorce papers. The daughter who is now older speaks of her second mom as being more a parent than her dad ever was ( hardly ever payed child support) I feel that being in a heterosexual relationship with two parents does not automatically qualify the parents as good parents. We see rampant evidence of child abuse and neglect in our country.

Now the above grandparents,if it was my situation where they made that type of threat,I'd probably disown them, they really have no business trying to run the daughters life, and I probably would have moved to a more liberal state just to get away from them.

What makes a good parent for the child has nothing to do with the sexual orientation of the parent but the character of the parent.(And of course the quality of the parenting) How does the sexuality of the parent determine the fitness of a parent?( Our gentalia determine a good parent?)And what about all the shelters that are overflowing with women who had to escape an abusive relationship with their husband? If anything ,what hurts childen is living in the kind of environment these women were trying to escape.
