We had the door open too long earlier this week and numerous large black flies flew in. They've been in the house for days, and gradually I've been able to shoo them out a window one by one, but there are still several in the house & we're about to leave for 2 weeks.

Just now I spied 2 flies having sex on the wall. I got worried that they might reproduce and we could come home to find hundreds of flies in the house. I knew they were vulnerable, so I smashed them. They didn't die, but flew off, still attached to each other, to escape, the buzzing of their wings distorted because of wing injury. I chased them, they remained together, and had to smash them 4 times before they died, first one, then the other. As soon as I had finished the job, my stomach just sank and I feel so terrible!

Even worse, after I threw their carcasses in the trash, a third fly hovered over their carcasses for a while and looked like it was trying to find its friends.

I am never going to do that again.
I feel like a monster. :'(:'(:'(:'(:'(:'(:'(

I feel the same way when I kill spiders. Even the black widows and brown recluses. I hate killing any other living thing. (I mean I am a vegetarian). I hope you don't feel too bad. I'm sure the two mating flies understand now. They're in a better place.

I know how you feel. I hit a male cardinal (the bird not the prelate) who was chasing down a chicada in the road. I grieved for days knowing that cardinals mate for life and are seldom apart (except when they are brooding). Somewhere a sad and forlorn lady cardinal grieves. sigh.

I seldom weep over houseflies though. Keep in mind they only have about a dozen neurons in their nervous system. I'm not sure pain is even in their repertoire.

The first time I harvested the carrots I planted in the garden, I cried, thinking, "I planted these seeds. These are my children, I care for them and water them, how can I kill them?" [/COLOR]

I hope you don't feel too bad. I'm sure the two mating flies understand now. They're in a better place.

Thank you.

Thank you!

I once arrived at my husband's office in tears. People took one look at me and said "Zerbie! What's wrong!" I had, very accidentally, killed a chipmunk that dashed under my car's tire on the freeway ramp. I was heartbroken for the rest of the day.

Cardinals mate for life? Oh - that's such a sad accident. I would have grieved for days, too.

Okay, housefly grief seems to progress a little faster. I'm not as full of remorse right now - maybe that has something to do with the 7 large black flies still harassing the kitchen.

It's just - a fly buzzed by my face this morning while I was praying, and I thought that it's flight seemed to join the prayer, and I felt emotionally connected to the fly. . . . oh dear.

That's like the dancing of the Stars that Madeleine L'Engle talks about. Oh, I love Mrs. L'Engle.

Madeleine L'engle is a wonderful writer of books for childrene and young adults. she is a Christian but an incredibly open and progressive one. You would actually LOVE her books. I read them as a young adult and then we read them aloud to our children. The "Wrinkle in Time" series are the most famous but she has written many others.

I just went outside to put some compost out. . . hubby helped out the other night by mowing down some tall weeds in the yard - - -

HE MOWED DOWN THE TOMATO PLANTS!!!!

:(:'(:(:'(:(:'(

They lie in withered brown heaps, the tomatos crushed, except 4 little yellowish ones the size of marbles, which I was so looking forward to harvesting!

I know he doesn't recognize plants well, but I never expected he would mistake tomatos for weeds - especially with tomatos on the vine!!!!

Oh I can't stand it!!!

Oh yea, I have a wrinkle in time, and did love it. But I don't recall dancing of stars.

Her books give me a euphoric sense of happiness. Seriously. I love how she impeccably blends science and faith. Her Genesis Trilogy is one of the best devotions on the book of Genesis.

In many of her books all of Creation is in this rythmic dance and song with and for the Creator, except that the Echthroi (fallen angels) are always trying to break up the dance and form a new, independent one. She also talks about the butterfly effect (which may have to do with both of those fly incidents you mentioned) where what happens to a butterfly can be felt all across the universe. I think it's actually a scientific theory, but I don't know how they test it. I am intrigued by it. Oh and she also talks about Kything, which is an extra-sensory-perception, and it is amazing. Sorry, that was probably beyond Cliffnotes, but I couldn't stop.:D

I think that was in either Wind in the Door or A Swiftly Tilting Planet. Yeah, I think it was the latter. (I am sorry about the tomato plants)

The Dancing Stars are in both A Wind in the Door and A Swiftly Tilting Planet: There is a scene in Wind in the Door where one of the Faris in Charles Wallace's mitochondria tells a younger forandolai that "I sing with the stars, I dance with the galaxies." There are other references to dancing stars in that book. Also, in A Swiftly Tilting Planet, Charles Wallace and a Unicorn, Gandor, dance and sing with the moving stars.

I here you about the fly thing. There are always big black ants in my house this time of the year and I feel awful when I have to kill them: I try to make sure I do it quickly but sometimes it doesn't work out that way. :(

Now this would have had me way more worked up than the flies ... Tomatoes are beautiful, and useful, and don't spread disease and vomit on my potato salad.

I'm sorry Zerb. I love you and when you are disappointed.. I am disappointed but....

This made me laugh out loud and everyone in the house wanted to know what I thought was so funny.

Why did it make you laugh?!?!?!!

Yeah, it was a lot more upsetting than killing flies. I was so shocked - went outside to drop the compost and pick a tomato I expected would just be perfect today and - - - - NO tomato plants. At first I was just perplexed: Where are they??? Then I saw their withering carcasses and - WAAH!!! :'(

I told hubby I am going to insist that he pay much more attention to plant life from now on. This is the same guy who cannot recognize carrot tops after 2 seasons of watching them grow in the garden. . . I don't get how he can't tell one plant from another.

As for L'Engle, as I said, I loved wrinkle in time - it was right up my alley. :cool:The others sound like the kind of stuff I go for, too - will have to check them out! Are they in the young adult sections of stores? I seem to recall I had to find Wrinkle in the children's section or something.

I don't know, Zerb, I think it was one of those mental image things. The picture of your husband whacking away obliviously as tomato plants went flying... sorry. If I had a tomato... I'd give it to YOU.

Zerb, love, you are just a jewel and a wonderful person.

Me? I am more of a hard-ass. I still wonder why Noah didn't swat those two flies/mosquitoes and other annoying pests that bite me and make me itch. And in Texas they are bigger and more annoying. Just like the governor(did I actually say that? )

I do know people though who instead of crushing roaches at first sight, construct little traps and then when caught, put them outside into their natural environment.

When I was little, a friend offered me raisins from those little red boxes, and I took one look at it and they reminded me of little baby roaches, and to this day have not ever eaten a raisin. I know, wierd!

Hey, it's all good. It takes all kinds!

Go on Zerb, we need more people like you in the world.

I am more cynical I guess.

It's OK Zerbie ... those flies, and all of their friends will all be united for a big party in Fly Heaven in a matter of days anyway ... they will find each other there and they'll probably make a toast in your honor too, just because you're such a sweetie ... : )

Awwww, you guys are so awesome!!

Sherrie and Awe, you both cracked me up!
Png, thanks for the kudos, and the image of you leery of raisin boxes made me laugh out loud - maybe I'll think twice about raisins too, now, ewwww!!!

:lol::lol::lol:

Ya'll are fantastic, all o' ya.

Oh Zerb, your tomatoes are gone? That's really sad. I would be feeling like that too. My sweetie isn't always that thoughtful when proceeding with chores, but at least she planted the tomatoes and they are in pots! Her glitch is with anything breakable. Last night she broke a beautiful crystal vase and a glass. It's an on-going deal.

I think you should have your hubby come up with a written action plan, describing how he plans on learning more about plant life and how he will avoid any future destruction of wanted flora. (Sorry, it's the auditor in me! Action plans are a great tool.)

Flies...Ok, true story. I was hanging out in my bathroom (will spare you all the details) and a common housefly landed on my bathroom mirror. He sort of stayed in the same place and I was wondering if he was seeing his reflection in the mirrow. Well, then he started an up and down motion, tilting his bottom to the mirror. This went on for MINUTES, I was fascinated and disgusted all at once, but mostly amused. This fly was attempting to do it with his reflection!!!:lol::lol: I didn't have the heart to swat it. :o
