Below is the trailer for the newest Adam Sandler movie. I love Sandler and pretty much everything that he has done, barring a couple movies. Anyway, I saw the trailer on TV last night. At first, I laughed then I began to really think about it and what it was saying. I am sort of offended by this movie. I feel it makes fun of the GLBT community by trying to "make a buck" off of our struggles.

The jist of the movie is Sandler and Kevin James play two straight friends that get married. They use the gay marriage to get the rights of a domestic partnership. I just dont think I can find this funny. Like I said it really gets under my skin for some reason. Both my boyfriend and I were watching it last night and he had the same reaction that I did. Thought it was funny at first then got a little pissed.

Maybe I am wrong and just over-reacting to it. Watch the trailer and tell me what you guys think. How does it make you feel?

Okay... I feel like commenting. I think it looks pretty funny, but in a way I could see how it would be insulting. I think for one it is pointing out a problem with mere "domestic partnerships"/"civil unions" and the like. Now I don't mean gay marriage. You see, a friend of mine wrote a paper for gay marriage. She pointed out that civil unions and domestic partnerships do in fact erode the family. She pointed out also, however, that gay marriages do not. You see, it has to do with the wording and such. We in America don't really jibe with the whole, separate but equal. When something is separated it becomes unequal. She pointed out that when domestic partnerships and civil unions are created as alternatives to marriage, and they are only for gays, then straights want in. Then it becomes something that can be entered and left whenever. This is why MARRIAGE is necessary. She did research on such countries as Denmark, Sweden, and other more "liberal" (as in the social libertarian) countries where domestic partnerships were used, and she found that it created a decay of the family and the country. This is not an argument against gay MARRIAGE, but Civil Unions/Domestic Partnerships.

Now back to the movie, I think that it points out how such problems would arise when domestic partnerships are created. Then anyone can enter, and it has nothing to do with Marriage. It is separate and unequal in all senses of both words.

Namaste,

Greg

most EXCELLENT point on the comparison of Marriage and domestic partnership. I am going to tuck that piece of knowledge away for a great defense for Gay Marriage.

I find the movie to be offensive, but I have a feeling its gonna do more good than bad. If anything its gonna make domestic partnerships something to laugh at, which, like Greg said, is good. I think... I have a good feeling about the movie though.

Hey Greg, did you notice who was singing in the background?:lol::love:

I think that the movie could be considered offense if you think about it to much... but must people won't think they just want to be intertained... and overall it will probably just make the same-sex couple seem more common and 'normal'

I think that the movie will be funny and that it can do any real harm... and I don't think that there are any bad intentions...

I think it looks like a funny movie. I could see how people could take offense to it. For me, I'm easy-come easy-go (made the mistake of saying that to a guy friend of mine before I came out... that was interesting.) and don't generally take offense to things where humor is intended. No offense where none is taken, right? So, will I see it? Probably not... not my kind of movie...

I haven't seen this movie, but I'd be interested in doing so and redering a comment...the media really has a huge impact on us these days.
