I've been in California for a while and thought that bashing of the GLBT community would be less than in my home state. However, the reality is that it's worse. I don't think I even want to count how many times claiming Christians I've been around have labeled something, some event, or someone as "gay" in a derogatory manner. And the reality is that I know I can't talk about my sexuality with anyone because I would be condemned by the people of the Church. It's a sad reality when San Francisco is so close. I guess I'm just disappointed that California can be so homophobic.

Squirt! Nice to see you back. I know that in my denomination some of the most conservative and homophobic congregations and Presbyteries are in Southern California. Sometimes I think the church is becoming a sanctuary for people who want permission to hate someone. sad commentary.

And I here people say, "That's gay..." all the time. I then ask them if it involves two men making out on a couch with pink boas and rainbows. Their response is always no... And I then say, "Well, its certainly not gay."

Hi from Sacramento!

Sac is a pretty gay friendly place. Sure, people make comments and a handful of family and friends don't have much to do with me. But, so far it's been quite nice. My partner and I can even grocery shop together, argue, put our arms around each other, and aside from the occasional funny look, no one bothers to notice. We are fairly out when out and about, hasn't been a problem.

Of course, I stay away from most churches in the area! I've been to MCC here in Sac. It's the gay church so you'll be fine there. And to St Francis in Sac midtown, very gay friendly. There are about 3 or 4 others as well. I'm not much into church functions, because most of the Christian churches wouldn't want 'gay' me around. :p

Wow! wonderfully put about how the church is a sanctuary for people who want permission to hate someone. EXCELLENT!! and so sad that the church is taking this path.

The church is irresistable to sanctimonius predators. I often feel their presence when I enter one. It's pretty unnerving like a Twin Peaks episode

I think that is so true. Isn't the OPC down there? The Orthodox Presbyterian Church that is.
