I will just let the story speak for itself. I am in awe, stupified, without words of any sort.

NEW YORK - A peacock that roamed into the parking lot of a fast-food restaurant was attacked by a man who vilified the bird as a vampire, animal-control authorities said.

Beaten so fiercely that most of his tail feathers fell out, the bird was euthanized, said Richard Gentles, a spokesman for the city's Center for Animal Care and Control.

"It's just unbelievable that someone would do something to a poor, defenseless animal and do it in such a cruel fashion," he said.

The peacock, a male several years old, wandered into a Burger King parking lot in the New York borough of Staten Island and perched on a car hood Thursday morning. Charmed employees were feeding him bread when the man appeared.

He seized the iridescent bird by the neck, hurled it to the ground and started kicking and stomping the creature, said worker Felicia Finnegan, 19.

"He was going crazy," she said.

Asked what he was doing, she said, the attacker explained, "'I'm killing a vampire!'"

Employees called police, but the man ran when he saw them. Authorities were looking for the attacker, described as in his teens or early 20s.

It was not clear how the bird made his way to the Burger King, but a Staten Island resident who raises peacocks said he had given some to a person who lives near the restaurant.

what an odd incident!

I have been around peacocks a few times, and talked to people who have owned them. They are indeed beautiful birds, and I always get a sense of peace when i see them. However, they are not extremely bright, and seem to lack the common sense of other birds. For instance, they do not know to seek shelter during a storm. The owners have to round them up and put them in a coop to protect them. (at least, that is what the owners told me)

Peacocks are not the brightest bulb in the pack, they are quite noisy and messy. But I've never heard of a 'vampire' peacock in all my years of birding.

Sounds like that guy might have some mental/emotional issues. Birds now, who knows what or who later. Hope they find him and get him some help.

No doubt, peacocks (the male of the peafowl species), are one of the most beautiful creatures you'll find. A literal rainbow explosion of color! :rainbow:

Just like men, good looks and brains rarely go together in one guy.

You have no idea how much I need the laugh your post generated!! Thanks Steve!:lol::lol:

Fortunately, I know good looks AND brains do exist in females. I am very blessed to have found one with both characteristics!! :D:love:

The Dreaded PEAFOWL (http://www.khandro.net/animal_bird_peacock.htm)

"In Asia, the feathers of the peacock are considered auspicious and protective. However in the European tradition, it used to be considered very bad luck to keep them in the home.

One silly explanation for this superstition is that it was promoted intentionally to prevent people from eating this large, delicious member of the pheasant family. In that way, the bird would be protected from extinction, for many people thought it was rare .

The reason for the superstition has more to do with the eye-like markings at the tips of the feathers which, around the Mediterranean, recall the dreaded "evil eye"-- the ever watchful and envious glance of the she-demon, Lilith. She was blamed for otherwise inexplicable deaths of infants, among other misfortunes.

Only partly as a result of this association with the evil eye was it believed that the flesh of the peacock is poisonous. But in any case, that is nonsense. At the height of both the Greek and Roman cultures, the bird was served at formal dinners with its feathers cunningly pasted back on, possibly with a honey mixture used as glue, so that the dramatic beauty concealed the roasted fowl."

Visiting my mother in BlueHill Neb., the other house in town (http://www.clicksmilies.com/s0105/spezial/Fool/yaya.gif) "kept" peacocks and they'd once or twice a day come-a-calling... Noisy, dirty, 3-stoogy birds that are far less impressive if you never see them (even once) show off... After a week I can see how some might think them nasty... Living and endurring them for a year, I think "vampiric" might've eventually found its way into my mom's vocabulary... (I love all God's creatures and don't want to bad mouth them, but they are the last of the bird family that'll be reading this...)

I actually cried when I read this story. I thought it was a horrible deed. How could anyone kill a peacock? I hope that the peacock will forgive the man. I move we have some memorial for the peacock.

This story seems like a metaphor or a parable about how the world treats GLBT people. We are beautifully arrayed in amazing plumage and most people enjoy having us around, but every so often a rabid loonytune runs into the parking lot and beats the sh** out of one of us (sometimes figuratively sometimes literally)
