I'm not sure it it's good news or not. The US Army has offered my full tuition to the school of my choosing. I'd have to serve a few years after school, but there is also the chance they would send me to Law School... at the university of my choosing. It sounds great. My parents are thrilled.

Here's the catch. I already live in a (very well decorated) closet, but a closet all the same. I was looking forward to being able to have a life once I'm in school, and be who I am without my parents breathing down my neck all the time. Join GLBT clubs and groups, maybe have a girlfriend, and be able to be out. But, if I take the Army Scholarship I fall under the "don't ask, don't tell" policy. So, I'd be back to square one. Still in my happy little closet. The school I want to go to is FAR too expensive for my parents to pay for, at 50K a year.

The whole point was... I'm not taking the Military Scholarship. And my parents can't, for the lives of them, figure out why! lol.

Tink,

I encourage you to apply to the school you want to go to ... along with others that are more in your price range. The sticker price means NOTHING. You really can't tell whether your parents can afford it until you see what your financial aid package (merit and need based) looks like. The common wisdom is to apply to schools in three catagories: Your "stretch" schools, your "comfort" schools, and your "safety" schools. this applies to getting accepted as well as to "Price range" That way you are assured that you have someplace acceptable to go when the whole process is over.

I am currently paying for THREE (count them) college educations with a combined annual price tag of $105,000. Believe me... I could never afford to pay sticker price!! The boys got merit scholarships, need based aid, loans, and work study. We are paying our share using PLUS loans (loans to parents for education purposes) We will be paying them off for a while but will still be able to retire (probably)

I can't tell you how to live, but I would encourage you to think very carefully before accepting the military scholarship. Living in the closet is more expensive than you realize.

Amen. And we've "been there, done that" ... closet-wise.

I think it is because You recognize that your integrity cannot be bought. Score 10 self-esteem points! You performed well with this test!

Yeah, we all just had lunch and they are still encouraging me to re think me decision. Not going to happen. I reminded them of the amazing need-blind acceptance policy, and the guarantee that if you can get in the school will figure out a way to pay for it. Their financial aid program is among the top in the nation.

This is going to be a blast.

Glad to hear that you are sticking to your conviction! I agree with Scotty. You certainly pass the self-esteem test.

One thought comes to mind. You mentioned that your parents have no idea why you are turning this opportunity down. But I bet they know why in the back of their minds. They may simply be in denial.

I don't know, Daniel. I guess it's possible, but I'd be really surprised if that were the case. **shrugs** I've decided not to let that bother me, really. I think that it's going to be best to just tell them the truth:

The military is not my thing.
