Ms. Sills was a phenomenon. With her glorious coloratura soprano voice and sparkling personality, she brought opera to American audiences as no singer has done since Caruso.

I owe her a lot: she hired me for the opera company that I sing with.

Her passing leaves me sad. Sad because she was an extraordinary person. The air vibrated around her wherever she went- on and off the stage. She didn't take anything for granted, and worked hard to bring joy to others.

She brought Art to Life. And Life to her Art.

Thank you Daniel.

She was one of my early inspirations and heroines when I was just getting interested in opera.

she really was a remarkable woman. I remember when she announced that she was retiring from performing, citing her aging voice....I remember thinking how unfair that was, and how men's voices have a longer stage-life. She was so gracious. I loved seeing her with Carol Burnett too.

been thinking about you as you experience this loss. I'm sending good vibes to you.

Not to mention the Muppets. Talk about nerve and verve! The Pigotletto sketch almost had me peeing my pants.

The NYTimes website is chock full of stories about her, but I'd like to relate mine here.

We were on tour my first week at the opera, and I got the news that my grandmother had died. So I went into the company office to let them know. I was kinda dazed at that moment and really didn't know what I was going to do next. Five minutes later, Ms. Sills' assistant came and told me that Beverly (who was sitting within earshot of her assistant) wanted me to go home right away and that the company would be sending me the following morning. I didn't have to do a thing. A car picked me up and took me to the airport. I will always remember her generosity. She was one classy gal.

You wanted to do your best for her because she demanded that of herself.
