I know we have a variety... so I was just curious to see what people do all on one page...
:)
I only posted a few options simply because those came to mind and I'm kinda braindead right now...
Please do tell a little about what you do.. what is it? what denomination or instrument or whatever.. I'd be interested to know.

Hi Jennifer,
I have a full time job taking care of my brother who was in a car accident 30 years ago. He is a C-5 quadraplegic and I care for him 24/7. I have only had him in my care for the last 4 years, before that I worked at the local Community College as Student Support. I ran the peer tutoring program for the college and was involved in many other areas of support. I found it very rewarding.
Everyday that my brother survives is a god-given miracle. When the accident occured they only gave him five years to live. He has survived on a 10% kidney function for the last ten years. He is paralayzed from right below the neck on down. He was only 19 when the accident occured and has a wonderful attitude and is a great inspiration to me.

How critical is the "make a living" part?
Technically, I haven't made a living for over a year. I still do ministry, though.

I needed to mark 2 of those choices; I make a living by being a teacher and a musician, both are paying gigs for me.
can I add a third? how about zookeeper (for my duties here as moderator)??? :p

Mark me down as a professional student and part-time office/computer worker. I'm a paraplegic and use a wheelchair. I have my own apartment and am mostly able to take care of myself.

Of what kind of zoo animal we most want to be at the zoo?? How I digress.........
I am a counselor, in a college setting right now, soon to be changing jobs and working for a managed care corporation based out of Pittsburgh. And, in just a few weeks, have to go there for training, Keltic! Maybe 3D is not far away for us either..... (yet another digression).....
For the managed care corporation, I will be evaluating and approving services for mental health needs and rehab needs of individuals. Great opportunity, great benies, I am PSYCHED!!!! I am also in a private counseling practice, counseling families in their homes, teach here at my university, and do child welfare trainings and workshops. I am a busy gal, but hope that this new job will help me to be less busy- I am ready for that!!!!:)

Well I didn't know which to click: musician or teacher.
I am a singer by career identification. But this does not make the living.
To make the living (and to be fully honest I am only working part time now anyway), I teach people to :sing:
A few years ago, the living came from multiple categories simultaneously:
1. singing, opera gigs plus regular church solo job
2. teaching people to sing
3. my massage business, which I gave up when I changed states (regulations here were very complex, and I was launching several new endeavors simultaneously & I found researching how to be a legal massage therapist here too daunting at the time, so it expired.)

i haven't posted in a while and i guess this would be a good one to share my personal joy in :)
i had my hearing on june 14th and the judge found me totaly and completely disabled. so i guess technically i am retired now. the judge backdated my claim to may 15 2004, my lawyer says that i can expect the first backpayment on august 1st.:D:dollar::dollar::dollar:
at that point my job will be reclaiming my life in florida:weee:
on the downside, my doctor thinks that the problems that i have, outside of the vascular ones, are being caused by porphyria (i thought she made that word up:lol: ). i looked it up online and if i have it that means that i am a "royal vampire wolf" (my words:D ). fortunately porphyria looks like it can be controled to some degree if you can eliminate the triggers. i should get the initial diagnosis on wednesday. (i told my doctor that i had already won the social security case and i diidn't need any more complications:lol: )

Gosh! I don't know whether to extend congratulations or condolences but I'm glad you are at least getting the SS $. that should take a huge load off your mind. I hope you don't have to pay too much of it to your lawyer

tks u-dog, believe me it is all good :) , but it is absolutely shameful what SS puts people through. the system needs to be improved, but i don't know how it could be achieved. perhaps as in my case where every doctor i have seen since 2000 has been pushing for me to apply it should be streamlined somehow. dunno. gvmt is set up to favor the gvmt.
the people that i ran across that where in their 4th plus yrs in the system who where obviously in more need than myself. it's a shame.
for myself - i am almost ready to return to work, just need a little work on my left circumflex artery - which i can get the treatment now that i will have a medical card! don't make a lot of sense to me. the porphyria, well, right now it is a mere amusement to me that explains a lot of strange things that my body has done in the past, that has made other doctors do pet, cat, ekg, eeg, mri, dog, and whatever other kind of scan you can do, plus the spinal taps, marrow biopsy (NEVER AGAIN!!!:eek::unhappy::smashy::shield: :headbang: ), just to have the docs say - gee we have no idea.
enough about me... more work stories... btw, i was a boat driver for disney for 15 yrs, and i am planning to return to that part time. after i get my fuel injector cleaned that is.

I am a full time student. For some reason, I have never gotten a return on a job application for very menial jobs, such as working at Target. Go figure. I haven't been interviewed, either-it seems that whenever I try to secure a job, the manager isn't around.
I did, however, sing at a church once for four services and was paid a total of $178 dollars for my work, which I appreciated. I would love to find a church somewhere where I could do this more regularly, but haven't done so yet.
Someday I think I would like to be either a musicologist or music therapist, but I also think I may end up also being a singer by profession, perhaps as a supplementary source of income. As Zerbie said, singing alone does not tend to make a living. (Unless you are a size two with huge breasts, some talent and incredible luck...then you MIGHT be Britney Spears, but then again, is is really WORTH it???) Anyway, that's where I am right now.

I'm a barista at Starbucks to pay the bills right now, but I'm going to school to be an English teacher. :) One of these days I want to be a writer. Maybe. Or a civil rights worker. That'd be a dream career. Whatever I do, though, I guess I wanna end up being an educator, so... :p

Years ago, I owned a half interest in a bicycle shop. My partner had put himself through grad school in English by working in a bicycle shop, and, the job market for English majors being what it was then, this qualified him to work in a bicycle shop.
Have you checked out the job market lately, or do you have a position in mind, or am I just a few decades out of date?
Peace and Love, Bruce Chris

He hasn't mentioned doing any teaching. I just figgered, he DOES know how to sing.
But if he doesn't teach, he can probably recommend a few people who DO.

I'm a musician and sing in an opera chorus- my 'night' job for the last 18 years. Though voice teaching is my passion, along with writing.
Anthony- A great voice teacher, Manuel Garcia, was often quoted as saying: "If you can speak you can sing." Of course, he lived during a time (the 19th century) when elocution was something of an art form. So one might amend his remark to say "If you can speak well you can sing."
Figure out how to make a rich resonant tone when you speak and your singing voice will follow suit. ;)

Well, Americans today tend to speak somewhat poorly. Even so, I have yet to meet ANYONE who can speak, and hear the difference between one pitch and another, who cannot learn to sing. I've taught people with severe trouble matching pitch, one guy with about a 4 or 5 note range TOTAL, and they all got better with practice. 4-note-guy developed an entire octave.
Antony - if you really would like to learn to sing, ask Dash to recommend you a teacher or two who you can contact. You might have him sleuth around for a teacher who has good results with absolute beginners. Personally, I really love watching the absolute rank beginner get started well and make progress. It's such a joy-filled process!

it is! Some things in common:
Antony - I hear about SOX all the time in various trainings and on audits - a big issue with insurers.
Pablo - hmmm....got a voice mail from my girlfriend today, she mentioned something about my underwear (I'll leave the rest to imagination)...some nights I am also an underwear model. :D
Zerbie, Daniel (and the rest) - I LOVE to sing. Not sure that I do it all that well, but often when my friends are over we end up turning on the karaoke and they all sit around and listen to me singing half the night. My girlfriend loves to hear me sing. I would LOVE to take singing lessons, just so improve the extremely raw ability that is there. I know there is a lot to breathing techniques, otherwise, slightly tone deaf and not much in the upper range.
Makin' a livin' - I work for California state government, Dept of Insurance, I manager a group of auditors and our job is to audit insurance companies to make sure they are in compliance with regulations regarding fraud investigations and referrals. It's a great job, keeps me VERY busy (even brought some work with me on my vacation this week), have a great group of auditors and an in-house analyst. Learning a lot! "Auditor" isn't exactly one of those professions youngsters yearn for. But the college years went by fast along with working full-time, and the pay is great.
I travel a lot for work, so here is something else in common (Jules) - I drink lots of Starbucks on the road! It's the official coffee supplier for me and my audit team! Just give me a regular black venti coffee, or on a really hot day a low fat iced mocha light ice...Makes me a happy camper!:)

I'll be a full time student for another 10 years or so... hopefully I'll be paid to teach English to college students after that.
Right now, I do education policy work at the Mackinac Center for Public Policy in Midland.
