Hi Folks,
It is time to call our senators and urge passage of the hate crimes bill. The vote is due any time now, and I have just received the alert from my local anti-gay policy group urging its' members to call and ask for a NO vote. Ironically, they say the hate crimes bill would undermine equal protection under the laws. I don't understand how they contort reality that severely, but the point os obvious - - it is time for us to speak up!!
Call your senators today!! Call and email your friends and anyone else you know who supports equal protection and urge them to call their senators as well. Ask them to vote yes on the Matthew Shephard hate crimes bill.
Thanks everyone.

Oh you poor baby that sounds like misery!!
Weren't you ill with a cold recently before this, too? Sounds like your body needs a lot of gentleness and TLC these days.
How open are you to non-traditional "energy" medicine?
Anyway. Wishing you a speedy return to health, and lots of comfort.

Thanks for urging a YES vote Progo.
:) Something tells me you have easier senators to lobby about this one than I do.

I think you're right!
I called my MA and VT senators, since I also live in VT on vacations, and all of them said that they supported the new hate crime legislation.
This brings to mind another issue: I wonder if I could also contact my senators or perhaps someone higher up urging them to consider Futile Care Laws a "hate crime"? Because, even if doctors are acting on what they think is ethical, they are discriminating against disabled/sick people, and many in society feel that sick people are a drain on society and that we shouldn't give them Medicaid, which is a form of hate. Who do you guys think I should call about that? I'd really appreciate some suggestions on this one.

Thanks for promoting this Zerbie...it is driving me nuts waiting for the vote. I was interviewed by Chicago's Windy City Times about the Hate Crimes Bill. It appears that I'm now a 'Hate Crimes law activist'

Congrats, Antony! How cool that you were quoted in the WCT article! : )
And hooray to everyone here for working on this legislation ... the vote has been postponed, but please keep calling!
Here is an excerpt from an email sent on July 19th from the Matthew Shepard Foundation:
The Matthew Shepard Act has been put on hold — for now! We appreciate all of your emails and phone calls to your Senators over the past two weeks as we have been anticipating a vote on this historic measure. Unfortunately, as an amendment to the Department of Defense bill, the vote has been delayed due to debate about the war in Iraq.
But, please continue your calls and emails to your U.S. Senators. Let them know that all Americans regardless of their race, color, religion, national origin, gender, sexual orientation, gender identity or ability deserve to be free from violence and crimes committed because of hatred and bias.

I wonder if in the process of contacting my state senators and others any further, I could mention the futile care law as an example of bias/hatred against disabled people. To illustrate the kind of hatred that I mean, which I see as comparable to hate crimes but actually more dangerous because it's done in the name of 'compassion' I've included two links from You tube. I encourage everyone to look at the comments under Euthanasia Blues, in particular for hateful comments about the disabled/prejudice.

I would like to post a disclaimer: under the video in the last link, there is an anti-gay comment, so please excuse me...I included it because I feel it establishes an important link between the oppression faced by the gay community and that faced by the disabled community. The link below talks about disabled people during WWII in Germany and includes footage from a Nazi propoganda video. I would like to also reiterate that it was not only in Auswitz or amongst the Jews that this occured. You could have been a full blooded Aryan during WWII, the Nazis still would have killed you if you were disabled.

Also, I would like those who read my post, "Shooting the gay cause in the foot" esp. to watch the following clip, as I shows an example of what I mean of the "left" using Terri Schiavo to push their agenda.

The religious right are going to crank up their campaign for sure. Coral Ridge Ministries just sent 33,000 petitions against the Bill to President Bush and the Senate's minority leader:
