Just kidding!
We saw the latest movie- The Order of the Phoenix- a few days ago, right after it came out. It's much darker than the previous ones. Even caught a discussion about matters Potter on the News Hour with Jim Lehrer (PBS) last night. The writing, according to all the commentators, has keep pace with the age of the progagonist.
Also discussed, was the interesting fact that this series of books has had a broad and sustained impact on reading, and the reading habits of boys in particular. Apparently, boys don't read as much as girls in the long haul. And there was another interesting factoid that stood out: research has shown that those who read more get more exercise. Isn't that interesting?
Harry's done a great deal of good. Stirred up a lot of imagination. I think that's the way we all get into matters of spirit.
If I was to play any of the characters, I think I'd like to be Snape. Second choice: Dumbledore.
What about you?

No need for me to even read Harry Potter. I teach 6th grade and my students read it like crazy, and they tell me about it. :D

Austin, I'm not at all surprised to find that you were the one to start this thread...
Here the book came out and midnight last night. I have no desire to read it personally, but I have a couple friends who went last night to go get it. Let us know what you think of this one Austin... and what number is this now? 6? 7? 8?

Keltic, you really are such a brat.......
I took my daughter to our local Borders on Friday night, to participate in some fun until the book went on sale. I went back and picked up my reserved copy the next day (we just couldn't stay awake until 12:01 AM, even with all of the excitement!). I am still not even halfway through book 6, so I will be awhile to get to the new one, but I am so excited at the prospect!!! I have seen all of the movies and enjoy them so much. And, I hardly ever read fiction, but this series has definitely kept my attention, so much that I think I will read the series more than once!!! She is a gifted writer and as Daniel said, I would absolutely believe it that it has encouraged more reading among those that haven't in the past.
Enjoy all you die hard fans!!

If you want sir, I will buy you a copy. PM me your address and I'll have amazon send it to your front porch! Then you could read it yourself, and not bother with questioning us youngins... we're far to feisty to answer questions.

Ok ... pages from the end!! Harry Potter is DEFINATELY a Christ-figure. No question about it! He willingly gives his life for the salvation of the wizarding world and finds himself alive again. In the noble British tradition of CS Lewis, Harry follows in the footsteps of Aslan the Lion. Voldemort falls into the same trap as the White witch because he (like her) does not understand the power of radical vulnerability and weakness. I love it.

I wrote this as a letter to editor to our denominational magazine:
Dear Editor,
Harry Potter discovers in the end that his power to defeat the Dark Lord consists entirely in his ability and willingness to make himself vulnerable and to lay down his life for others. One might almost say that the theme of the Harry Potter series is: “Evil can only be defeated by love expressed in powerlessness.” Or, more eloquently, “Greater love has no wizard than this, that he lay down his life for his friends.” Now, where have I read THAT before? Oh yes! It was in the Bible! Who’d a thunk it?
Only one question is left unresolved now. Will the parents who were so adamant about protecting their children from the evils of JK Rowling allow their children to read those books about a young wonder worker who offers his life that others might live? Or, will they will begin locking up their New Testaments in order to protect them from the wonder worker of Nazareth who willingly gave up HIS life to defeat the power of the Dark Lord that others might have life and have it abundantly? Only time will tell.

Interesting... very interesting... wonder if that will give certain parents a different opinion about the books.

Dave! you did NOT just come out publicly, real name and all?! I thought you were avoiding that. . . . Wow. . . :)
As to you POINT. That is precisely what I have been thinking for weeks about the Harry Potter book-burners, etc. About how ironic it is that those obsessed with appearing Christian would oppose even having one of these books on the premises, when the entire story is about the triumph of good over evil, light over darkness, love over cruelty and death. Thanks for saying it out loud.

Yeah, I know. I got the book about a month late (I never bought it for some reason). I read it, no, I consumed it. Merlin's Pants it was awesome. I knew Rowling would come up with a kick-ass ending, and boy was I right. I was so exhilerated after I read it I just prayed for her and thanked God for J.K. Rowling. And then I knew she was a Christian, and whadya know? I was right. MUAHAHA EAT THAT CRAZY ANTI-HARRY POTTERS MUAHHAHA!!! okay... calming down. *breathes deeply*
Anyway, yeah. The book was filled with beauty and truth. I can't help but wonder if the wizarding world is at all a metaphor for the Church. I mean isn't it slightly possible? Oh, well... just my opinion.
