I just rented a movie called My Brothers War. In it, a woman dresses up like a man to join the rebs to be with her brother. She is wounded and taken care of by a Southern Belle widow. The widow finds out she's a girl but loves her anyway. It's fablous.
I love civil war history. I am WAY too voluptuous to pass as a soldier, but I could re-enact as a civilian. Maybe sell lemonade to "our boys". I'm not a belle. I'm a redneck. Think Cold Mountain's Ruby as opposed to Ada.:)
I live close to the site where Johnston surrendered to Sherman. They have re-enactments every year. One year, a union soldier asks a bystander if she had any tobacco. She said "we had acres and acres of baccy until Sherman burned it!"
I loved this movie. I highly recommend it.:)
