It's such a stereotypically gay thing, but I've loved muscials my whole life. They were the meat at potatoes of my musical life when I was growing up: Showboat. The King and I. South Pacific. Follies. Brigadoon. Company etc. So I guess it's a bit odd that I ended up in the classical end of things, rather than in the 'thee-ah-tah''.

But we never forget our first love, right?

I'm melancholy with the closing today of a show that I happened to see twice- Grey Gardens- which featured a singer in her prime: Christine Ebersole. You don't get any better than this on the New York stage. And melancholy because, when I hear someone sing like this I wish I had that kind of voice. Well....I was a soprano- and a very high one at that- until my voice changed, but that's a different story!

If you don't know the show, Grey Gardens is based on the 1973 cult film classic with the same title.

Here's one of the numbers sung by Ms. Ebersole on The View.

KoaE7r1kkr8

And here- in an interview about the show- on a show called Theatre Talk- Ms. Ebersole talks about Grey Gardens gay appeal.

0dczb8Tb-9c

The song she refers to was featured on the Tony's. She won the best-actor-in-a-muscial award that night.

I'm melancoly ......because, when I hear someone sing like this I wish I had that kind of voice. Well....I was a soprano- and a very high one at that- until my voice changed,

But then.. I ask you, Danielle.....

"What ever happened... to Fae Rae?....

That delicate,..... satin-draped frame,

As it clung to her thigh.....

how I started...... to cryyyyy,

'cause I wanted to be dressed.....just the same.......

Give your self over..... to absolute pleasure!

Swim the warm waters........of sins of the flesh!

Erotic nightmares.....beyond any...measure!

And sensual daydreams.......to treasure...forever!

Can't you just see it!.... Whoaaaa! ooooh!

Don't dream it! Beeee it! :D

Ah.....Peter Hinwood! The monster in the film. Who I've always thought was meant to evoke hunky Peter Berlin of the -then- nascent gay film industry- dutchboy hair- skintight pants and all. Sins of the flesh indeed! :D

Give me a piano bar and a pianist who knows the score to either Godspell or Hair...and stand back!

... and I definitely lack appreciation for most of them. But, even I love Rocky Horror Picture Show, Hair, Godspell and Jesus Christ Superstar. Can I have, at least, honorary membership - even though the golden era of musicals makes me want to drink heavily and pass out?

I just thought I'd add that my personal idea of hell is a soundloop of either Oklahoma! or Sound of Music. I'd be looking for hot coals to stuff in my ears.

Have any of you seen the Broadway version of "Wicked"? My gay friends were buying tickets for my wife and I 8 months before it came to town last April. I was like, big deal, a freaking musical... Ho hum!! Anyway, my friends were salivating practically the day of the musical, dressing up as Glinda the good witch, and quoting all the lines, playing the soundtrack...flaming all over the place...

OMG! then we went to the show and I was hooked. It was simply wonderful!!! My friends cried. Are you surprised? It was really good.:applause::applause::applause:

I love Hair. And Phantom, and Evita, and JC Superstar. I got a tape of Superstar with Amy Ray as Jesus and Emily Saliers as Mary. Pretty Groovy.

I'm a sucker for anything Sondheim ... the man is a genius. My favorite is clearly Into the Woods.

Can't really call Gilbert and Sullivan's work "musicals" ... more light opera, or ... [someone who actually knows what they're talking about can correct me here] ... but I really like the Pirates of Penzance, too.

Andy- How about musicals before the 'Golden Age' ie the 1940's- 1970's? That is- the real golden age? You know, there was a time when 'musical' meant a chorus of beauties onstage, like the Ziegfield Girls. ;) Bet that would hold your attention!

Hubby and I saw George Gerswhin's Of Thee I Sing- which won a Pulitzer Prize in 1931- last summer. Bet you would have liked it. Chock-full of political satire, girls and snappy melodies.

...not much into musicals in that I haven't seen any live.

I did really enjoy Chicago, of course thats a movie. And guess my all-time favorite movie musical would have to be Wizard of Oz. I quite liked Dreamgirls (LOVE LOVE LOVE Jennifer Hudson!). Do any of those count??

We are talking about getting tickets to The Color Purple in SF, October. Latoya London, one of my favorite American Idol finalists, is playing Nettie. I'm assuming that would be a musical or Ms. London's lovely musical talents would be wasted! I'll get back to you if we are successful getting to that one...

Oh, and I was in a light opera once in Sacramento. Aida. No singing part, but I did lead my horse onto stage in full makeup and costume. Standing ovation on opening night! Freaky happenings backstage but in the end we made it work. Three rehearsals, three performances in front of a live audience. Write up in the paper (ok, not my name but about the horses). It was cool and I'll never forget it!

The last stage production I went to was the HMS Pinafore also by Gilbert & Sullivan. There were a group of girl scouts in the audience. In an effort to make opera more interesting to the girls; the actors played it a bit too light/silly in my opinion. I was reading that the play/opera was a political satire of the Royal Navy.

The first three to come to mind... Rocky Horror (well, not the first, but it was once it was mentioned).... RENT (although I've only seen the movie)... and Oklahoma!, although I don't really think it was the play I cared about, I knew a lot more of the actors then I realized... watching them was the fun part... my swimming teacher was the funniest, and he's a complete tease, so we teased him about it all morning

Okay, I admit it. I am a sucker for musicals and anything that is live on stage. I like the musical "Chess." A few years back I had the opportunity to be in a prodcuction and sing in Hungarian. It was a lot of fun. However, I am just as content to sit, listen and watch.

CHESS!! I love that show! My kids were in a production of it a couple of years ago as well. It has some fantastic songs in it. The chess piece ballet number is amazing. My favorite number is the Quartet (Model of Decorum and Tranquility). Very rich and complex polyphonic texture.

The year before that they were Jekyl and Hyde which I thought a very thin and not very interesting show (at least musically... plot and staging wise it was kind of interesting)

Yes, the Triumphal Scene!!!

Freaky happenings - the people running the show backstage wanted us to try and attach those huge bags under the horses bottom to catch any possible messes while on-stage. I refused telling them it would look so horribly stupid they would be better off without horses. Plus there was the nearly impossible logistics to actually attach them (to what??). They agreed - no bags. As it was, every performance prior to the horses entering the building, they would poo and therefore no mess on stage or back stage. :p We were originally going to ride the horses on stage, but only had one assistant. My horse was very young and a bit frightened, I tried to mount but he ended up slipping on the floor (yes, they were warned there should be some sort of carpet or footing), me with him. It scared everyone a bit so they had us only lead the horses in. It would have been really cool to ride them but oh well, at least we were in it!

Would that be Sunday the 16th? One of us is reading the calendar amiss.

Anyway - on Sunday the 16th (I think) hubby has a recital he's doing with friends - don't know if you'd be here early enough to make an afternoon recital, and song/aria recitals aren't exactly musicals. But it would be very good.

I was hoping you were around the following week or two so I could get us comp tix to a musical DH is involved in - but that's later in Sept.

We'll figure out when we're all free and what's around to go do.

Oh, then Sunday the 16th. Training is the 17th & 18th. My flight (once I book it) gets into Phoenix around 315, then we have to get a car and check into the hotel. Monday evening will be around. Tuesday evening will be a mad dash to the airport! What time is the recital? You know, I didn't realize your DH was a singer until you told the story about how the two of you met. Awesome!

Anyways, if no musicals this trip to AZ, we are still going to try and catch The Color Purple in SF. Of course, that definitely means an overnight stay and raw oysters @ Anchor Oyster Bar in the Castro! :D

Actually, you were right the first time; he's not a singer. He's a musical director, so he coaches a lot of singers, but from the conductor's standpoint, not the singing teacher's.

I'll check the timing on the recital, but I think it's before you arrive. :( Let's take the visit planning to PM so we stop hijacking Daniel's thread.

Daniel, honey, you must see "Wicked"!!! And I think you are right, gay men do have much easier access to their emotions. There aren't many straight men I like very much, but I absolutely love gay men, most of them. Gay men are the greatest, and if I have to be around a man, I prefer them to be gay.

Of course, I love it when gay men butch it up, like Nate did the other day, which I thought was priceless. This world would be a much duller place with out you guys. And Nate Berkus, who I must admit as a lesbian, I think he is beautiful and if I was a gay man, I would be all over him. Still though, he doesn't even come close to my lovely wife...
