View Full Version : My kind of town...

...Chicago is.

I hope you'll indulge a little joy-sharing.

The industrious Dash has successfully tracked down a suitable new abode for us, and we officially submitted our applications to the landlord.

Let the schlepping begin!

And what a schlepp it will be! And how happy I will be to make it!!

I'll fly up mid-month to help him -- and the strapping, young, moving lads of "Moving Buddies" -- make the initial intra-neighborhood move. And then we'll figure out how and when le grande schleppe happens pour moi.

Suffice it to say, we're both really excited.

And in the everything-old-is-new-again department, this move is an especially happy and interesting one for me in that my father was born in Chicago and I have 2-3 generations of paternal ancestors planted around the city. As an intermittantly-focussed, yet quite serious genealogist, this is big stuff. In fact, one of my immigrant ancestors -- a Drane, actually -- rests eternally mere spitting distance from where we'll be. WOW!

dsdrane,

Yup! We're well underway in phase 2 of a little operation I like to call "Bring the Boy Home."

Phase 1 involved all the parental/significant friend prepwork. All has been going well. My good mother has been absolutely wonderful! One never knows...you know? I came out to my parents in 1997, but I've never talked about having a boyfriend with them. She seems to be embracing the news with interest and joy for me.

Phase 2: Prepare a suitable nest...

Phase 3: Le grande schleppe de David!

Phase 4: Thanksgiving in Chicago.

Wonderful news!

... Send therefore your blessing upon these your
servants, that they may so love, honor, and cherish each other
in faithfulness and patience, in wisdom and true godliness,
that their home may be a haven of blessing and peace;
through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you
and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.

David & Dash, great news! Chicago is awesome, can't wait to go back for a visit. Especially since I accidentally deleted all my digital photos of the gorgeous skyline and the Field Museum, and wrestling photos from the Gay Games.

Anyways, good luck with the continued phases of moving. I'm sure the two of you will be plenty busy, happy and staying out of trouble...:love::D

So, David, you are a genealogist? I've really been wanting to trace my family history recently. Interesting family history on both sides! Oh well, now that would sort of be hijacking your thread, so...just saying I'm so happy for both of you!!

Seeds planted a few seasons back are starting to really bloom now! This boy meets boy love story from Chicago is making up for decades of Cub loses in the windy city.

Well if I lived in town I could bake some cookies and bring 'em over to the house-warming. You'll have to settle for electronic cookie substitutes. :cookie::cookie::cookie:

Is this why little Dash mentioned "packing" in another recent thread?:)

You two boys have gotten quite serious while our backs were turned! ;)

(Antony, Dash and Drane had been wooing one another for months without our knowledge, and a few weeks ago they publicly announced official Boyfriendhood.)

Best wishes to both of you at this joyful new step in your lives.

You can just feel the love blossoming, emotions getting deeper and the anticipation of being together growing. The excitement is sweet, and the fulfillment will be sweeter, like pure unadulterated honey flowing freely from the comb. I can just imagine the palpitations when you talk and plan and see little pieces of the journey falling into place.

It's really almost more than I can bear to see the love unfolding. I think I have to PUKE.

What a wonderful phrase. I am so happy for you, in case you didn't get that impression the last ten times I have posted so. And, residing together in such a fabulous city, to explore as your love continues to grow and expand. Blessings and grace to both of you throughout this transition and exciting and wonderful journey. Brent's prayer says it all..... Love to you both!!!:love::love::love:

...tell a church lady.

Little did I know the cat was already out of the bag.

Sunday morning, at the pre-service, quickie choir rehearsal, I was chatting with my fellow choir member, Olive, who also happens to be my L.E.M. coordinator [Lay Eucharistic Minister], telling her I wouldn't be available next Sunday because I would be in Chicago. Olive met Dash when he was down here last (and added his voice to our choir), so, without skipping a beat she said: say Hi to him for me. Then, sotto voce, she asked: he isn't going to take you away to Chicago, is he?

Yes, Olive.

She thinks for a second and adds: you can tell him for me that I no longer like him.

She was kidding, of course, and I appreciated the sentiment.;)

Fast forward to Coffee Hour, and one of my favorite octagenarians comes up to me and says: so I hear we're losing you.

Wha!? (Olive's good, but she ain't that good.)

I mentioned it later to my step-mother, who responded: well, the only person I've told is Janet, and....

Our pilgrims in Scotland have no doubt heard the news by now....

Those church ladies...I love 'em.;)

There's definately one thing you can count on in a church... good or bad, the news will spread... and it will spread very quickly.

(although my school does that too, with only 21 kids, you think you have a secret that you told one person... but really you're lucky if there's one person who doesn't know that secret.)

Well, we're still in a holding pattern, circling around the calendar. I'm going up this weekend and again over the Labor Day weekend, and then Dash has singing obligations before and during the Jewish high holy days, so we're probably looking at the last week in September...

...unless we start going/continue to go berzerk, in which case we may have to move it up.

We'll need several days because the move involves hitching a trailer to Gustaf (my car) and schlepping the 1,400 miles north from SoFlo to the Windy City.

As for the move, enjoy the anticipation time and give yourselves ample time to prepare, physically, mentally, and emotionally for such a big change. Last week in September sounds good - until then, anticipation is a wonderful thing. :)

No, it's not like that... you don't have to worry. He's our contractor/father of 3 kids at our school/happily married/one of the sweetest guys in the world. He bought the car for his 17 yr old son, but it he's a big guy and the car's small... so he turned it down... so he basically offered me the car.

(...and you know who you are. :D)

Your friend and mine (though, admittedly, I'm a little friendlier hahaha, if you get my drift:cool:), Dash, is now safely ensconced in our new apartment on the shores of Lake M (quite literally, the lake is our backyard).

He, two strapping mover types (well, only one was on the cute/strapping side really) and I emptied out the old place and filled up the new place. We got an incredible amount accomplished in very little time...so much so that, by the time I had to leave for the airport to zoom back to SoFlo, the joint was looking pretty damn good.

For someone like me, an ex-New Yorker who is long used to studio living with a maximum of three windows on a single exposure, this new apartment is downright grown-up. It's got a zillion windows (give or take) that open up to all four exposures and, like, a bedroom. What a concept! I've always heard of these things, but it never occurred to me I'd actually have one. W-o-w!

:D:cool::rolleyes:

Seriously, though, the place felt like home, which is fairly remarkable considering nothing of mine (save a yoga mat) is there yet.

But I suppose anywhere with Dash would feel like home.:love:

I think I woulda just plopped down on the couch and been completely immobilized if David hadn't been around to help sort out all the new space and stuff.

Anyway...it's ours now. And though it's sad and disorienting that he's not here, every step is bringing us closer together.

What do you mean WHEN they are finally together? All this love and affection is turning my stomach already. Afterwards, its just gonna be unbearable.

I keep hearing references to keeping it clean for the younger participants, but what about us old curmudgeons. My weak heart won't take all this sunshine and honey, I need some good, harsh insults and caustic cynicism to keep me healthy. I have all the sunshine shining up my skirt that I can deal with, thank you very much.

And might I add, as much as I am thrilled to bloody death for Dash and Dave - AND I AM TRULY THRILLED TO BLOODY DEATH - you guys don't seem to be thinking about me, at all. Could you guys move this along a little and start living together. I am in dire need of a little of the contempt that's supposed to come with familiarity.

So, come on already, let's get moving with this mingling of possessions - or whatever other transparent little codewords you want to use for your unseemly and joy-filled affections - mingle, guys, mingle.

ever watch the old Pee Wee's Playhouse series? it was a kid's show back in the early 90's, and my kids loved it. It was jam packed with innuendo and double entendre. One of my favorites has Jimmy Smits guest starring as a repairman. He offers the tip for home repairs: always call a professional repairman; he has the right tools, and he knows how to use them! or when the character, Miss Yvonne, the most beautiful woman in puppetland says "you know my motto: Be prepared!" Pee Wee Herman replies "hey, that's the same as the Boy Scout motto!" She giggles and says "Oh, that must be where I learned it!"

2 years ago, my kids bought me a DVD of the Pee Wee's Playhouse Christmas Special. Pure Camp, and innuendo and double entendre overflowing! It's just not Christmas without Pee Wee's Playhouse. :D

The queen of double entendre (a double in itself there) is Dame Edna Everedge ... aka Barry Humphries. (S)he is hysterical, and can say the most outrageous things without looking like she knows she's doing it.

;) That's the crucial part - setting up the yoga stuff! :D I don't feel at home anyplace unless my yoga mat is there. The yoga room is the first room I set up in this house, and the yoga corner was the first part I set up in my old apartments.

Lookie! Here's one of the rooms that has David so excited!! :D:love: (it's a little photoshop-py...I stitched three pictures together so all the windows were visible...)

And yes, it becomes home when your partner is there. That's how hubby & I feel.

Sigh... :'( I kinda feel like I'm staying in a hotel without David here...

I started clicking the multi-quote botton when I realized there were far to many thing to respond to...

Since you all clearly have no problem saying things that I probably shouldn't be hearing ()... where are we with pictures of all of you... I mean you should probably keep them PG-13... but still, you can get some pretty good stuff for PG-13

Shit!!! That's GORGEOUS!!!!!! Holy shit!!!
Is the rest of the apartment as gorgeous as that? Holy crap, what kind of hell-holes was I living in throughout my 20s?? I never lived in an apartment that looked like THAT, in any part.

Dayum, boys, ya done good.

As for feeling like it's a hotel w/o David. At least you guys got your own COUPLED space immediately. It's a much better energy than one person moving into the other's territory.

When DH and I got married, we had so much going on planning the wedding long distance, finishing up our teaching semesters, moving me, that we just moved ME into hubby's old apartment. No room for my stuff. Not to mention the ODDEST feeling the first day I woke up in "our" place which of course just felt like "his" place, and he left to go to work, leaving me sitting alone in the middle of the living room with nothing to do, knowing no one in town. Ewww, straaaaange feeling. We finally got our house, and have made it a true reflection of both of us. Not to mention, there's room for both of our "stuff."

It's a beautiful day in the neighborhood! :D

It's a beautiful day in the Chicago neighborhood!

Specifically, it's a beautiful day over here by Lake Michigan sittin on the couch with the boyfriend in our skivvies. :D:love:

It's a beautiful day for all manner of cuddles and smooches in between hanging pictures and lamps and generally nesting. :weee::agree:

My darling flew up from Florida last night, and I had the pleasure of coming home at 10:30pm from High Holy Days rehearsal to him. :weee::love::love:

It's gonna be a lovely Labor Day weekend.:)

Dang! that was confusing! I'm thinking... "hey wait... doesn't Dash?... I thought... David?.... huh???

You shouldn't do stuff like that to old people. We have a hard enough time keeping everything lined up! Have fun you two!!

And there you're doing it again!! Nesting sounds absolutely LOVELY!!!!!! Makes me wanna go grab my guy and "nest" for a few minutes before he leaves for the day.:love:

And for a moment there we were all genuinely confused as to when precisely it was that Dash moved to Florida and David took his temple gig.

Well...I'm back in SoFlo for my final two weeks. On the one hand, it was very painful to leave Chicago, but the pain was ameliorated by the fact that the next time I'll see this fair city is with all my stuff in tow.

I've kissed my boyfriend goodbye for the last time...and that's worth celebratin'.

Only 4.5 years ago I was counting the days until hubby (then, fiance) took Southwest Airlines to Houston so he could help me tow my stuff in a U-haul attached to my valiant little Prizm, all the way across I10 and the deserts of West Texas, etc., to Phoenix. Oh, I counted the days!

He arrived to fetch me exactly 11 days before our ceremony.

You count those days, David, and I'm countin' 'em down along with you. ;)

I heard your voice today by accident…
a voice message that happily, I had not erased.
Then…you were somewhere warm…missing me,
and I smiled more broadly to hear it a second time.

My phone will not let me save messages forever,
and I had to make a choice.
Pressing the number seven emptied me just a little bit.
I almost hope I miss your call sometime
For the delight of finding you here again.

why can't you save it forever??? I do that with some messages... one from my brother I've had on there for a couple weeks... and another one from someone... just because... sometimes even if it's an odd message it's nice to hear someones voice.

Chicago Bound

I DREAM'D IN A DREAM

I dream'd in a dream I saw a city invincible to the attacks
..of the whole of the rest of the earth.
I dream'd that was the new city of Friends.
Nothing was greater there than the quality of robust love, it led the rest,
It was seen every hour in the actions of the men of that city,
And in all their looks and words.

Here at last, here at last,
thank God Almighty, we're here at last.

:D

I type to you from our dining table in our apartment in Chicago.

We returned the U-Haul yesterday 20 minutes and 14 miles under the allowable. Nothing like a photo finish!

Our journey -- although long -- was safe, something for which I am extremely grateful.

Along with unpacking and settling in, I look forward to catching up on the rest of the world...y'all especially.

:love::love:

P.S. I hope you all know at this point that I would rather walk on my lips than engender feelings of jealousy, etc., but I must tell you that the highlight of our trip north was a wonderful dinner (at an undisclosed location) with our very own u-dog and Polly Purebread. They are, in a word, fabulous, and we were so excited to meet and sup with them. :weee:

It was a LOVELY time. seriously. So much nicer than that awful lunch with Andy... JOKING! Every single soulforce person I've met in 3d has totally surpassed my expectations. You all are an amazing bunch!

As for Dash and David? They are even more handsome than their pictures might lead you to believe. They also seem very well suited to each other. They seem to "get" each other at a level much more common to couples who have been together for a much longer time.

Thanks for making time in your journey to share a meal with us!
