My first post! :)

I just finished reading Mel White's book "Religion Gone Bad." The last chapter moved me to tears. Even though he is a Christian and gay and I am an atheist and straight, we are ethically identical twins. Like him, I am deeply angered by the Religious Right, and struggle with that anger turning to pure hate. As he unfolded his own struggle with his anger and hatred, and through the teachings of Jesus, Martin Luther King Jr. and Gandhi laid out a plan to achieve justice without "becoming like our enemies," I have to say he convinced me that this is the correct path.

The most I have done for the gay rights movement, I am ashamed to say, was attending two counterprotests against the Westboro Baptist Church. I am glad I discovered Mel White's book and Soul Force so I can get more involved.

Hi Str8Ally and a warm welcome to the Soulforce forums! If you want to make a difference, this is definitely the right place to be! We have activists, organizers, discussers and wannabe activists hanging out. Some here are just trying to figure it all out. We are quite diverse!

I'm glad you found the place. Hope you stay and share more. I think you'll really like everyone.

Welcome!! Hey! You've done WAY more than most people in that regard. Two protests! That's a lot! Especially considering what you were dealing with in WBC. . . .

I checked your profile to see if you listed where you're living, but I don't see it mentioned. Depending upon where you are, there are a WHOLE BUNCH of events planned just for straight allies this coming October. :weee: Check out this website:

www.sevenstraightnights.org

It's a Soulforce action, in cooperation with another organization called Atticus Circle, that I don't know much about. I DO know that this action is going to take place in several locations throughout the US, so there might be an event near you that you can be a part of.

Even if you can't make it to one of the vigils, if you have any spare change to give to a worthy cause, the Seven Straight Nights project will have some expenses that we'll need donations to offset.

Anyway, check it out! You'd be perfect for one of the 7 Straight Night vigils! See if there's one in your area.

Once again, welcome to the forum. :)

Str8Ally,

You need a nickname. I can't see typing, "Hey Straight, how ya doin'?" and I don't see calling you "8," and I'm not so sure about "Ally."

What can we call you for short?

Dang. I hadn't thought this through. You just ruined my entire day.

:D Just kidding. :D

(For the record, I have a very dry sense of humor so you all might want to prepare yourself for that.)

How about just to make things really awkward, confusing and uneccesarily difficult, everyone can call me r8Al.

;)

Ha, you can hit on me all you want - I spend most of my time over on Richard Dawkins' website, and the guys over there don't hold back at all, they're like rabid dogs on testosterone!

Remember everybody, my nickname is r8Al, WORST NICKNAME EVER!!!

Welcome 8, Glad to have you here!

I'm also very interested in the Seven Straight Nights, but I need a lot more information, the Seattle one would be easy for me to attend but date, time and location make a big difference in whether it will work out or not.

I know the lady in charge of the thing in Seattle, but haven't contacted her yet.

Do YOU know any more information about the Seven Straight Nights?

Again, Glad to have you here! :)
