View Full Version : Spin-off of Austin's thread: which Harry Potter character are you? You decide.

Which Harry Potter character do you most identify with and why?
My husband is a Dumbledore: hands-down, I don't even have to ask him to know that's his pick. He basically IS Dumbledore in real life. Like in Lord of the Rings he's Gandalf, absolutely. :magic:
Why: he has immense perspective and imagination. caring, generous, even wise in many ways. goes out of his way for others, but never in a foolhardy way. inspires trust from people easily. really pisses off the Bad Guys. :p
For me, Harry is the closest fit. We both had nasty childhoods and a lot of clueless, even malevolent, adults messing with us. Despite that, we both cling to a strong vision of love which enables us to find amazing wonderful friends to fight off the Bad Guys with. ;) I related to Harry a LOT in the latest movie. Been there!

I guess I identify most with Ronald Weasley.
OK, OK, everyone's had their laughs now; can I go on?
I think I am a loyal, hard-working friend who can be relied on. I tend to stay in the background. I don't like leadership positions. Also I have a lot of hand-me-down things that people have given me, some of which don't work very well anymore. (The things, not the people.) I am willing to try new things and be somewhat adventuresome, but it doesn't always work out.
I don't have red hair or older brothers, however.

Always a perfect little student...goody two shoes...library queen...knew all the constellations...bones and muscles...gestation periods of numerous animals (random details that I've fortunately forgotten)...totally read Encyclopedias when I was a kid...did extra homework just for fun...

I was going by emotional/situational identification. Hermione leaves me cold, always did. Watching the movies and trying to relate to her, I connect to being intellectual and academically accomplished, but those are cold facts and I feel no emotional connection to her character. She has a hard time fathoming what's going on with Harry's situation, whereas I've lived that stuff in real life (minus the wizards). So I really don't get her.
The one whose experiences and situation I most identify with is Harry. I don't know much about Neville, but in his few featured moments I identified very much with his emotional depths and empathy.

Neville's wisdom and strength emerge from being a loser and an outcaste. While that is noble it is NOT the source of your strength and wisdom.

I see some Minerva Mc (how do you spell it?) Conegall in you, U-dog. Intellectual, accomplished, ethical, willing to step up to the limelight when needed or fade to the sidelines and support from there, and very consciencious of rules and order but always in the service of humanity.
Ah yes I forgot Sirius Black. He lives quite a double life, people have all kinds of misconceptions about him, but he's loving to the core and only a few people know who he truly is. That actually sounds a LOT like you, Dave.

I love that boy, if he was real I would date him.
Danielle Radcliffe is my twin, really... I've got pictures somewhere to prove it, I'll see if I can upload them... And when the first book came out, that summer an owl showed up on the fence in my backyard, for reals. It sat there all day while I read the book. I was SO disappointed when it didn't drop off a letter... grr...
And I did live in a closet while my aunt lived with us, and yes, it was under the stairs! No joke.

The beauty of Severus' character is that you can't quite figure out where he's coming from. It's a great part. The villain, or the almost villain, is the most gratifying part to play.

A lot more fun than the real villain of the series, who seems monochromatic by comparsion. Snape has various shades to him. A lot more interesting to play. Beside, he has better hair. (Rather than no hair!)

Anyway, U-dog - was that the answer you would have given if we had not commented first?
I thought of Dumbledore for you, but replaced that thought with Minerva. Dumbledore, maybe a bit, as you say, "sprinkles," but overall he bucks the rules more than I think you would - he's a bit of a renegade, and that doesn't really describe you. Which is why Minerva fits better.

Yippee!! I nailed ya!! There was no question in my mind you reminded me of Minerva the most.
No, I did not read the books. When the craze descended over the books, I thought, oh it's one of those massively popular things so it must play to the lowest common denominator. Like Paris Hilton. Didn't go to the early movies either. It was hubby who told me the stuff was actually good, and he owned the DVDs, so he caught me up with a movie-marathon a few years ago. But overall, you can't get me to read fiction.

However, based on knowing myself, I would say the closest match would be a combo between Professor Mogonagle and Hemione. I love the strength of character and knowledge of the professor, and I ALSO Love the intellect of Hermione, and her vulnerability at the same time. As far as hotties are concerned, Cedric Diggory was definitely a cutie pie, but I have to say that I have a thing for Luna Lovegood. I just love how flighty and sweet she is!!!! I also feel like I may be a bit like Neville, very vulnerable and timid at times, but also very loyal, true, sensitive and empathic.

Neville is in the circle of friends just outside Harry/Ron/Hermoine. He is in every book. At the beginning he is a little over weight, has a silly familiar (like... a toad I think) is not very competant magically ... at least not until about book 5 when he starts to "get it". His parents were Aurors who were murdered by you know who. raised by his grandmother he thinks he will never measure up to his parents. In fact he is very courageous and loyal. he plays a key role at the end of the last book when he fully comes into his own as a wizard.
Over all... being compared to Neville is a positive thing.

Goodness yes, I love Neville. Neville is very quiet and empathic. Takes a long time in the "awkward phase" and suffers a lot of social embarassments but develops into a beautiful man with a heart of gold.
But from a purely theatrical standpoint, I would love to play Lucius (is that his first name?) Malfoy, Draco's father. I think it's the flowing blonde locks plus pure evil character combo that looks like so much fun.
I always identify with guy characters in movies. Does that *mean* anything?

My sons pointed out that JKR missed a golden opportunity. They thought that it would have been a very nice "coming full circle" of the Dursley subplot if -- in the epilogue -- Dudley and his wife had been waiting on platform 9 and 3/4 with their wizarding child on his/her way to Hogwarts for the first time.

The evil characters are the most fun. I love that Lucius and Draco are the very blonde characters. So much of western culture has always portrayed the evil charaters as dark. How many times have you seen Judas as a black man? In the old movies the darker the actors were, the more evil (or stupid) the characters were. Even today you see this.
I got a DVD from Netflix that was a South African production of the story of Jesus. I forget the name. All the leading characters were black except one; Judas was a tall blonde white guy. It was the perfect portrayal of Judas.
Now I have nothing against blondes mind you. I must confess to being blonde myself (with blue eyes). You probably already guessed that from the intelligenece of my posts.

Who said I was complaining ... I'm just confused (which is not hard to do ...)
And, I'll have you know, I'm VERY type B. I'm not at all demanding. So don't say I am. Ever. Got it?

I understand, sir. My apologies; It won't happen again!

I haven't read the books. I've seen only parts of the movies, never the whole thing (at least that I can recall)
:o
Boo! Boo! Boo! You have to read the books. I had my partner read The Order of The Phoenix even though we took the kids to see it last week. There is SO much more about the characters in the books. Tonks, Hagrid and even magical creatures.
I have just finished the LAST book! It was so good! My teen went to band camp for the week so I raided her room and snatched it. She just got it back after the week and finished it in 3 days!:p

I think I relate more to Professor Lupin, as Kinda always being the outsider, ans being fray around the edges.

After much thought on this subject...I have finally decided. I am definatley a Neville. Especially, when it comes to dancing with myself.
