Furry fandom

Some furry fans create and wear costumes of their characters, commonly known as fursuitsFurry fandom is a fandom distinguished by its enjoyment of anthropomorphic, often humanoid, animal characters.[1] Examples of anthropomorphism in the furry fandom include the attribution of human intelligence, facial expressions, and often anatomy, speech, bipedalism, and the wearing of clothes. Members of this subculture are sometimes known as furry fans, furries, or simply furs.[2]

Furries are either a group of people who identify with the furry fandom, or a group of furry characters in art or roleplay. Because people in the fandom tend to identify closely with their avatars (or fursonas), the two meanings are often used interchangeably.

In a few aboriginal tribes, there was also a belief that, at birth, every human was possessed by the spirit of an animal. Said person would grow to look, think, and act similar to the animal. The occasional person can be found that still holds this belief, and they are scattered throughout the subculture, often surfacing as the belief in otherkin or therianthropy.

Not closed minded... but I know that I don't have patience for reading... that's why I don't read books. This is different, it's more like a chat room. Wikipedia is for when school starts in the fall... get to use it plenty then.

Yeah, never had one either... but my grandparents did... when we'd stay with them they'd have to take it away so that we'd all go to sleep and stop making it talk.

... the only furries I've been aware of seeing are ones like you posted pictures of, Ren. Depictions like that should, I would think, bring fond memories for most people, as anthromorphized animals have been part and parcel of our childhoods.

Seems to me this goes back a long, long way and is presumably related to animism, which I have always had a fascination with. Being around the Australian indigenous cultures, I saw a lot of ceremonies in which participants wore animal costumes and skins - would that be "furrie"? It seems intertwined with a love and respect for the natural, to me.

I remember an episode of CSI about furries. People dressed as wolves and lambs such. It was interesting. Not for me. Now Lady Heather on the other hand......;)

I was completely unaware of this until Harrisburg Pride this year ... a few folks were there in varying degrees of furry attire. Someone I was with knew about it, and explained it to me. Learn something new every day. I'm an animal lover, big time, and even an environmentalist/conservationist, but don't think I'm a furry, sorry.

And i voted as a furry, because for the most part i collect the art.

And i read that the Vikings believed that the Berserkers took animal form in combat, and the word Berserk i believe translates to Bear-Shirt.

And yes i'm a also a furry fan because i enjoy films like the last unicorn and the secret of Nimh.

what are furries?

Nice to know that we old people aren't always the ONLY ones on a learning curve! I didn't know what they were, either, and for some reason, all I could think of were Tribbles!

Please stop hijacking this thread, the nerve of some people.

Because it isn't want most people like doesn't mean the elite(1337) have to hijack it.

For those who don't know what 1337 means it's Leet-Speak or 1337 sp34k.

Furbys are also a favorite in the circuit-bending set.
