My computer at home died. My Antivirus had found something, and at the same time windows was trying to update and restart......I walked away for a minute and Windows rebooted before the antivus program could quarantine the bad file.

I can't get it to boot up.

So this morning, I came into school to use the computer and work on my room. I also ordered a new desktop computer :( It's scheduled to arrive on Tuesday.

I'll try to check in again on Sunday.

Maybe I need a 12 step program.........

Don't we all. What are the symptoms of your cmputers demise? Do you have system recovery abilities?

the last thing on the screen says "Verifying DMI pool data....." then nothing else happens. I believe it will be possible to scan the hard drive with an antivirus, then copy my files to the new computer. so as soon as the new comp arrives, I guess I'll be taking it apart.

Oh boo, I am right there with you. Gotta go work on my room at school, too. My computer is not even hooked up yet. *Sigh*

I just went through a similar problem - ended up replacing my laptop and spending a couple of days reloading software and recovering my data files.

My thoughts will be with you.

This is the one nice thing about Apple's. They can get viruses, but it's not common. That said, I've had my computer into the shop numerous times. Crashed badly one time, had 'kernel panics' another.

We have two laptops- and the older one- which is about 10 years old- is still going. And we're sunk some dough into that one too.

They're like babies.....

I'm sorry you've having problems.

Your new one will be plenty zippy though, right?

So sorry Steve! That really sucks!!!

Hope that you'll be able to get your stuff off the old computer and come up ahead on the new computer thing.

alright, I checked in on this thread by using my cell phone yesterday....well forget that, it's nearly impossible. I can check my email on my cellphone, but responding is pretty crappy.

new comp will arrive on Tuesday. I'm checking on things here from my parents' computer. I can't wait until the new one gets here!

in the meantime, BEHAVE!

Errr... this must be so annoying, I feel so alone when I don't have a computer with internet... there is so little in the world without it some days.

Hope the computer can be hocked up quickly! We'll be glad to have you back! Don't worry, we'll behave! ;)

I'm back!!!!!

The computer arrived around 10:00am, I cleaned up the computer desk, installed a shelf about the desk, then hooked up the new comp! I'm online again!

Of course, all the papers and junk that were on the computer desk are sitting on a card table to my right. I need to organize, discard, sort, put in baskets, etc. Nice new keyboard with virtually silent keys, no more click click click.

Steve,
Glad you are back online. :) New computers are often a blessing since the hardware gets obsolete so fast, and the new ones are always much faster and powerful with more memory, faster processor, etc.

You definitely need to run the antivirus on your old computer before you start moving files from it to your new computer. You probably should even run the antivirus scan 2 or 3 times, to ensure that it gets all of it.

I thought you said you got a laptop - what kind did you get? Is it a Pentium 4? Does it have a DVD burner/player or just a player? I ask because I want to transfer my old 8mm video tapes to DVD but havent tried this yet. Wondered if you have any experience burning new DVD's.

not a laptop, although my kids have recommended it to me. I got a Gateway Media Center Edition with Windows XP, it does have a dvd/cd-rw burner, and plenty of ports for loading pics, etc. No experience with burning dvd's yet.

I was hoping I could find a cable that would let me scan the old drive, then download a couple of my programs and my files through a usb port. I saw something close to it at the store a little while ago, but it wasn't exactly what I need.

Anyone have any ideas about doing this?

... I wish someone would invent a utility that would do this in 3D:

Glad to have you back, Steve.

Assuming you have a 3.5" hard drive from your old computer, you should be able to easily find an enclosure that would convert it to an external drive with a USB cable. Search under "hard drive enclosure" or visit/call your local computer geekdom.

You would then be able to scan the drive. All of the files should be available, assuming the hard drive didn't take a hit on your old computer, but Windows XP does not really allow for transferring program files this way. Generally, you need to copy your data files and reinstall your programs from original disks. Some older programs can be copied over, but it is not really reliable.

Anyway, after you have all your stuff off the old drive that you want, you can reformat the drive and you have additional hard drive space and/or a backup disk that holds lots of stuff.
