Summer is technically over. I go back to work today. We start with an inservice this morning, then building meetings after lunch. It won't be a bad day, but it does mean that there's no more time for me to sit in the sun and read. :'(

Clerical day tomorrow which is basically making sure our rooms and our lesson plans are ready. Students arrive on Monday.

I begin classes next week. It will be my last semester at college. I will get a bachelor's degree in childhood education. I'm happy that I will finish.

Wow, that's actually amazing that you're only just now "back to work" if you start school Monday! The teachers at our school were back the 13th, although really they never stopped working, but they also go back this Monday... (well, unless they delay a week which they're thinking of doing, because they still aren't ready)

Here it goes, just another school year... 2007-2008... man they go by fast...

I'm happy for back to school, too! For one, I'll spend less time wondering where my 17 year old is. I also have quite a few school jobs lined up for the month ... I do motivation/prevention/staff development stuff on a contract basis with a private provider out of suburban Philly ... doing a full-day of staff development, bullying prevention, conflict resolution with a private school in southern NJ next week. I love the work, and the extra money is really nice ... we also do high ropes course stuff, and I'll be spending 4 days in the next few months suspending kids from trees on ropes ... in safety harnesses, that is ... very butch of me, I think. :D

I'm also going to be taking some new grad classes this fall in Restorative Practices ... very cool stuff. Could lead to a full-scholarshiped Master's Degree ... nice plus ... www.iirp.org, if you care to see it. Neat new(ish) field in human services.

Steve- I remember what going back to teaching in the Fall was like. My work at the theatre is not unlike this, though we started back to work at the end of July.

For everything there is a season? :)

Thanks, Steve, for bringing up MONDAY!

We start Monday also.
I don't look forward to the crying, the pouting, the having to be dragged into the classroom kicking and screaming.
And that's the teachers. :D

Actually I always think: "Today is the day they give babies away with a half a pound of tea"

I have NO IDEA where that comes from but its a song from the 20's and I only know that line. My mom used to sing it.

Err.... I even tried to just search with that little part you gave me, but I can't find it... does anyone else know more of the lyrics?

(YIKES, I just realized I'm helping to hi-jack another thread, and I didn't mean to... sorry Steve, I'll stop talking now)

Here is blurb that came up when I googled:

"Today is the day they give babies away: "The Day They Gave Babies Away" is a story by Dale Eunson that appeared in the Christmas 1946 number of Cosmopolitan, their most successful Christmas story ever. It was published as a book the following year. Perhaps more to the point, there was a soldiers' ditty circulating in the 1940s that went "Today is the day they give babies away / with a half a pound of tea. / If you know any ladies who want any babies / Just send them round to me." [AW]"

Here are the rest of the lyrics! Isn't the internet wonderful??

This is the day we give babies away
With a half a pound of tea
You just open the lid, and out pops the kid
With a twelve month guarantee.

This is the day we give babies away
With a half a pound of tea
If you know any ladies who want any babies
Just send them round to me

There's an island where out in the sea
Where babies grow up on the trees
It's oh so much fun, to swing in the sun
But you have to watch out if you sneeze, you sneeze
You have to watch out if you sneeze

You have to watch out if you sneeze
'Cause swinging up there in the breeze
If you happen to cough, you might very well fall off
And tumble down flop on your knees, your knees
And tumble down flop on your knees.
And when the stormy winds wail
And the breezes blow up in a gale
There's oh such a plopping and flopping and dropping
And fat little babies just hail, just hail
And fat little babies just hail.

Teddy Bear's Picnic

If you go out in the woods today
You're sure of a big surprise.
If you go out in the woods today
You'd better go in disguise.

For every bear that ever there was
Will gather there for certain, because
Today's the day the teddy bears have their picnic.

Picnic time for teddy bears,
The little teddy bears are having a lovely time today.
Watch them, catch them unawares,
And see them picnic on their holiday.
See them gaily dance about.
They love to play and shout.
And never have any cares.
At six o'clock their mommies and daddies
Will take them home to bed
Because they're tired little teddy bears.

If you go out in the woods today,
You'd better not go alone.
It's lovely out in the woods today,
But safer to stay at home.

For every bear that ever there was
Will gather there for certain, because
Today's the day the teddy bears have their picnic

CHORUS

Every teddy bear, that's been good
Is sure of a treat today
There's lots of wonderful things to eat
And wonderful games to play

Beneath the trees, where nobody sees
They'll hide and seek as long as they please
Today's the day the teddy bears have their picnic

I knew the song, my dad used to sing it to us. I did a search for the lyrics under that title.

It was one of the songs that Polly sang to our kids! we had at least one video or audio tape with it on it. Are you familiar with another "bear" song? "My Uncle Walter goes waltzing with Bears?"

Well, it's not like we weren't all thinking it anyway ... I am reminded of a bar about an hour away called "the Ranch" ... no reason, I just am.
