“The Nutty Professor” Jerry Lewis yesterday apologized for making an Isaiah Washington-like gaffe the other night during his annual Labor Day charity telethon by using the same gay slur that had the “Grey’s Anatomy” doc fired.

Lewis, 81, asked to be forgiven for his “bad choice of words” after Neil Giuliano, President of Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD) issued a statement calling “simply unacceptable” the comedian’s use of the word “faggot.”

While Jerry Lewis joked about someone's family member being an "illiterate fag...", he had the presence of mind to realize what he was saying and stopped mid-word and mid-sentence. His "joke" was obviously self-censored, unfortunately not before it began. His apology left no doubt to me that he knew the remark was "simply unacceptable" - it's just too bad that he didn't acknowledge the same about his thoughts.

Not all, however, share his sensitivity to, at least, the expression of that kind of bias. The Drudge report (uggh) publishes on its website comments by Drudge minions - it even has rules about appropriate content. But it still allows things like:
Everyone uses the word fag especially all the toiletfags. Since Jerry Lewis raises money for the retardeds and not the toiletfags, the toiletfags will attack him because its not their money.
If Jerry Lewis raised all that money for AIDS or gay toilet marriages and said the word fag, this would not even be an issue.

Makes your heart feel warm and kinder towards the ignorant masses, doesn't it?

Perhaps it should be the DREDGE report? Or the GRUNGE report?

I'm sure the "retardeds" (aside from being a vicious word in its own right, it has what to do with MDA?) will be happy to have this "enlightened" blogger's support.

Although I hate the word "faggot" I somtimes wonder if gay political organizations make things worse when they make a big deal out of someone saying it. Jerry Lewis is not a politician who has control over our daily lives. He's a washed-up old actor. Who cares what he thinks? Maybe calling attention to it gives him more publicity than he deserves.

True words of witdumm coming from an obviously (un)educated idiot. Yes, it makes my heart worm. Guess we should feel pity for the blogger, as he apparently was never provided with a loving, educated and enlightened bringing up.

I think the Isaiah Washington thing was WAY blown out of proportion, and I think there's valid cause for concern about intersections of race and sexuality issues regarding that situation. That said, here's an old guy asking for your money making fag jokes. In this case, as mentioned, he stopped himself and apologized of his own accord. Fabulous. If he hadn't, though, and the MDA had nothing to say about it either, I think that would give a legitimate reason for people to question where to send their money. I'm NOT saying that people should abandon this charity with the way things worked out. But had things gone a different direction, I think that might be an appropriate response (and at very least that people should be informed of the event so they can make their own call).
