I just drove 8 hours to pick up a new project car bought by a close friend of mine. I haven't done that in 20 years. It is a 1959 Fiat 1200 Gran Luce - it's a Luigi from the movie cars.

He's the body guy, so guess what? I get to rebuild the engine, brakes, and other mechanicals. That this is exciting to me should be indicative of the extent to which I am a walking stereotype - a motorhead.

As soon as I saw that tiny little locked-up engine, I was inflamed with all the old passions about obscure old crappy European cars. It doesn't compare with a '66 Rover, which was my last foray in elbow deep grease, but it'll be fun.

My God, I am pathetic. Pathetic - but very excited.

You don't mean that as a bad thing, right?

The best diesel mechanic I know decribes himself as a $3 flamer. And my sons' God-parents have a collection of several collectible cars that they have rebuilt themselves - of course, they are each only titled in one of their names because they CAN'T GET LEGALLY MARRIED YET in Ohio.

I think this is very cool. Crappy European cars, and there all so classy looking. Fiat Spider, MG, Triumph...fun cars to drive when they're running.
Besides, everyone knows most gays are great with tools.

Ain't it cute?

For the real sickos, I'll have pictures of the engine soon.

Now that I dig. Very cool stuff. I would love to drive a goofy little unfashionable car like that ... fits my wannabe professor image. Must wear tweed coat with suede elbow-patches at all times while driving, preferably smoking a pipe.

My parent's first car was a little Ford Cortina. How would you like to work on a car like this, Andrew? Of course Dad is also a motor head. He loves working on cars.

Ah Brian - now you're talking. I wasn't old enough to drive at the time, but my first engine overhaul was on my uncle's Ford Cortina. I was in Australia, at the time, and my uncle was going to scrap the car, even though the body was in excellent shape. He agreed to let me cut my teeth on that little engine - and he drove the car another 5 years before selling it.

My first car was a restored 1964 Dodge. Midnight blue, A guy hit me and wrecked it beyond repair. I had 650.00 dollars in it.
I found a picture of one but mine was nicer.

That's all we ever get with car photos.

But, for me, the TUSCH is the real selling point. If a car doesn't have a nice tusch, forget it.
