Well Steve, here is a bedtime story for you.
(It is 7:00 pm here, 9:00pm Eastern time. Time for any self-respecting teacher to be getting ready for bed.)

Speak Up For Yourself (A cautionary tale)

Once upon a time in the early 1970's there lived a sixth grader. He was a tall quiet kid who never gave any trouble. People paid no attention to him, and he always sat in the back of the class in the corner. Teachers often ignored him and rarely gave him any work. On one sunny May afternoon the whole clas received their report cards. Poor Rafael (we will call him that) had been forgotton and had no report card, and no promotion to seventh grade was forthcoming.

The next year he sat in the corner in the back. The teacher thought that Pablo looked somewhat familiar, but couldn't say where she had seen him. But as we know, quiet people are easy to ignore. The year wore on and he was forgotton again in the back corner. Being shy and quiet he was hesitant to point out to the teacher that she had given him no assignments. As our sad tale continues, he was neglected in the promotion again finding himself once more in sixth grade. Sorrow gripped his heart for he really wanted to get out and experience seventh grade.

After several years of this people began to notice that there was a very big kid with a beard in the back of the room. Everyone assumed he was one of the "dumb" kids who had been held back several times. Then they started to make fun of him and called him names. Teachers were afraid of him because he was so big. No girls (or guys either) would go out with the bid dumb kid. So he sat alone and unwanted in the back, never going on a single date or seeing what life was like in the world beyond sixth grade. (author pauses to sob uncontrollably dripping tears on his teal green iMac keyboard)

Many years later on the first day of school the teacher who was to teach Rafael's class had a tragic accident. When the students and parents came into the room, they assumed Rafael must be the teacher since he was so much older than the other students. The new students and parents did not know who he was. Rafael decided to hand out a few assignemnts to keep the class busy. Day after day, month after month this went on. Only the school board knew of the true situation, but since they were saving a lot of money on salary and benefits, they decided to keep quiet.

Years went by and everone accepted that Rafael was the teacher. Rafael being shy (as we have already stated) did not want to correct anyone so he kept on handing out assignments and teaching lessons. Soon everyone began to call him "Mr. Rodriguez". He didn't want to point out their error so the situation persisted, and it continues to this very day.

The moral of this tale is this: If you don't want to end up being a 46 year old sixth grader, speak up for yourself.

All characters in this story are fictional and bear no resemblance to any 46 year old teacher who regulary posts on these forums. Any resemblance is purely coincidental.

not only did I check this out immediately when you posted about it in the other thread (at the end of my work day, thank you very much) I also blogged about it, and put it in my blogroll. I even commented at your blog, which is more than I can say you ever did at my blog. Not that I'm bitter, no, I'm not bitter.
