It's been a while since we had just a fun, no-reason-to-it thread. So there's a new one...
Describe your favorite scent.

One of my favorite scents is clean mountain air in autumn or winter with a hint of wood stove smoke. It's very comforting. Also, the smell of roses elicits tranquility.

...one that's right up there is the heady combination of:
pine trees
fresh pond water
and
skunk.
It lets me know I've returned to Maine.

And I do believe that my sense of smell is one of my strongest in term of my stored memories:
Freshly baking bread in the oven
Wood burning in the fall
Smell of a new doll (yep, that's what I said)
Lilacs
Patchouli, my ABSOLUTE favorite scent to wear
Lavender
I am going to add to this a bit: Like dsdrane explained, what do you enjoy most, or what do these scents remind you of?
For me, scents are what bring me a feeling of comfort, warmth, security, almost always reminding me of times when I am cozy in my home with all of my loved ones around.:love:

PEople are often surprised to hear that I like the smell of skunk (not TOO fresh or strong thank you and NOT on me or on my dog) What I found out was that it is a genetic trait. There is a small minority of people who find skunk smell pleasant rather than repulsive. I have it. So do you.

The afternoon's fading cologne mixed with the evening's fresh sweat.
Curry.
Woodsmoke is up there (I really miss camping).
And some others that I can't recall, but that I'd certainly recognize if I smelled them again.

No, I don't have the "bullshit gene" But I will defend to the death your right to inhale deeply on the farm.
My dad had this thing when we were driving through the countryside in the fall and spring when manure spreading was going on. He would INHALE deeply and say "ah! fresh country air" It drove me INSANE.
Then I grew up and had kids of my own. And of course I loved nothing more than to inhale deeply and exclaim "AH! fresh country air!" Their loud complaints and annoyance were music to my ears. Annoying your children is one of the great joys of Parenthood! As my father knew well.

First it would be the smell of horses. Just to dive my face into their necks and breath, and feel their breath on me. Exquisite.
Then, the ocean. I love the salty, fishy, sandy smell of the ocean. Especially on a crisp, foggy morning.
Closely followed by the smell of my sweetie wearing her perfume that I like the best. Heavenly. :good:
I love patchouli too, and tuna caserole (maybe something to do with ocean??), baking chocolate chip cookies, certain candle scents and my own perfume. :cookie:
I hate the scent of skunk (sorry, no genes for that in my bod), cow dung, my precious little dog's breath, liver (wont' allow it to be cooked in my house), mold, unclean refrigerator...wait, this thread is for scents I like so I'll stop now!

I'm having a hard time believing you because when I smell a skunk I do a 180 and run like hell

I like to wear Halston for men or Stetson.
Favorite scents are: fresh rain, hay being cut, sweetgrass, apple wood burning or hickory wood, fresh linen, apple pie.
Worse than skunk is the smell while passing a hog farm. You never forget the stench of hog excrement. The smell hangs on everything. Yet it also evokes pleasant memories because my grandpa's farm was near a hog farm.

...of my mind *
The place where I used to live had a small tree of this stuff. So every time it bloomed, at night, the backyard (and surrounding yards) smelled like you were inside a giant SweeTTart....with the addition of the most intensely nostalgic feelings you've ever known..
Blooms open:

http://thosedarnsqurls.mswin.net/prod06.htm
This Night Blooming Jasmine can not be beat when it comes to intensity of fragrance.
It blooms about 3-4 times a year for me, if kept well fed, and just fills the entire house with the sweet, heady aroma that makes me feel like I'm vacationing on a Tropical Island.
Throw away those room deodorizers and grow this unusual gem, instead!
So that and the smell of gasoline, I like that too. And yes I do wear gasoline cologne, it's called EverSingle

sandalwood
patchouli
curry
babies
crayons
cookies in the oven
the air right after it rains
clean clothes
Christmas trees
cinnamon
strawberries
merlot....gosh there are just too many to count!
Thanks for inviting everyone to reflect on the marvel of creation.
God is good (all the time!)

I have to agree with Polly and others who said curry - it is my comfort food and smell.
But, above all else, I love the smell generated by sawing and working wild cherry in my woodshop. When working with other woods, I can't wait to finish a project and get onto the next. But with cherry, I find more and more reasons to keep sanding, scraping and otherwise working the wood until someone asks if I'm ever going to get that job finished. It's probably no surprise that the best finishes I ever put on furniture are those on cherry pieces I've made.

I know I have a lot more, but that's all that comes to mind at the moment.

churches, I can only think of one church I can go into where I don't feel sick because of the smells... (well, at least I think it's the smells... maybe not)

As a recently ex-Floridian, I must wholeheartedly agree with Patrick about jasmines...and, to that I would like to add gardinias.
Pretty and fragrant!

When I read David's cow manure message, and before I saw Dave's reply, I immediately and involuntarily said "Ah, fresh country air!" ... that must be genetic too. Learned it from my Dad, and I do it to my kids! We country folk are a strange lot.
That being said, here's a short list:
Pumpkin anything
Cinnamon (especially when combined with orange)
Other spicy scents (allspice, ginger, nutmeg, clove) ... ever been in a real spice market, with barrels of this stuff sitting around (e.g. Old City of Jerusalem)? Wow!
Cologne: Royall Bay Rhum (a REALLY manly scent in my book ... bay laurel)
Puppies
A crisp fall morning
Lilacs in bloom ("Every time I smell lilacs ...")
New carpet (I know, that's a bit odd)
Living a few blocks from M&M Mars, and 20 minutes from Hershey, believe it or not, I no longer care for the smell of chocolate. Blah.

You know, I keep waiting for the punch line.
a few years ago, at another forum I participated in, one member started a thread that asked "what is the worst smell you can think of?" after many people responded with the foulest, grossest smells imagineable, the original poster edited his thread title and initial post to read "what do you smell like?":rofl::rofl::rofl::rofl::poke:

Smell of a new doll (yep, that's what I said)
Vanessa - When I was a little girl, I got a doll called, Baby Dear. It looked just like a newborn baby, all scrunched up face and curled up arms. I LOVED that doll and all dolls. A few years ago my husband bought me a baby doll - and it had that SMELL. I bawled. And I don't know why, except that it reminded me of my toys and my mom, and how it was when I'd get a new doll when I was a kid at Christmas.

Nope - can't find it on-line. Gotta make it yourself...mix one part patchouli, with 3 parts tuna, add some pasta and veggies, and then mix in your favorite animal scent....Bingo! Yumm......:shifty::tdown::hissy:
Uh, glad to hear I'm not the only one who spends time hunting for sock pairs....

Yes, I do have one, but the original one got sold in a garage sale when I was about 12. As an adult I always scoured antique malls to find another one. When e-bay came out, I kept bidding until I found a really good one. (I paid WAY too much). I keep it in the cradle that was my daughter's, along with a couple dolls my husband got me, a couple dolls that were my girls'. I love my baby dolls! I also think they should be played with - one of the things that makes a doll so loved
