OK, we do a lot of "what's your favorite.....?" So here's a twist:

What songs or hymns are your least favorite? which ones cause you to run to the door of the church if you see them listed in the bulletin?

Not a churchgoer? what songs do you just hate?

I'll start. "At Calvary"

Years I spent in vanity and pride,
Caring not my Lord was crucified,
Knowing not it was for me He died On Calvary?

Chorus:
Mercy there was great, and grace was free;
Pardon there was multiplied to me;
There my burdened soul found liberty At Calvary. 2. By God's Word at last my I learned;
Then I trembled at the law I'd spurned,
Till my guilty soul imploring turned To Calvary?
Chorus:

there's more, but we don't need to torture the whole forum with it.

Sung to the Stephen Foster melody "Master's in the Cold Cold Ground"

A friend of Jesus! O what bliss
That one so vile as I
Should ever have a Friend like this
To lead me to the sky!
Refrain
Friendship with Jesus!
Fellowship divine!
O what blessèd, sweet communion!
Jesus is a Friend of mine.
A Friend when other friendships cease,
A Friend when others fail,
A Friend Who gives me joy and peace,
A Friend when foes assail!
Refrain
A Friend when sickness lays me low,
A Friend when death draws near,
A Friend as through the vale I go,
A Friend to help and cheer!
Refrain
A Friend when life’s short race is o’er
A Friend when earth is past,
A Friend to meet on Heaven’s shore,
A Friend when home at last!
Refrain

and there are other, just as dreadful songs that they sang at the church I attended in my youth. :'(

Are you washed in the blood of the lamb?

Lyrics and Composer: Elisha A. Hoffman, 1878

Are you washed in the blood,
In the soul cleansing blood of the Lamb?
Are your garments spotless? Are they white as snow?
Are you washed in the blood of the Lamb?

The imagery is gruesome to say the least. I'd rather we leave this kind of expression of martydom, as well the other gems like it from the 19th century, on the scrap heap of history.

Yeah, I am with you on this one. There are a few other hymns like it that I would rather just leave behind. The passion for blood among fundamentalists continues with the gruesome The Passion of the Christ by Mel Gibson.

:eek::eek::rofl::rofl:

Oh gee, you hit the nail on the head. I remember singing those songs as a kid and wondering at the words.

The one I hate was "God give us christian homes" and it had a verse for all the family members and what their role was supposed to be.
I always figured it should go
"God give us fundie homes.
Home where the father is lord of all
beating the wife who is down the hall
whupping the children both large and small
God give us fundie homes"

I don't get as annoyed by the WORDS of the hyms as by the MELODIES.

What I hate are the schmaltzy (sp?) hymn tunes of the 1800's.

My least favorite:
Amazing Grace
What a Friend We Have in Jesus
Rock of Ages
Jesus Savior Pilot Me

I generally play the organ in a neo-baroque style. But when I get one of these, I put on the heavy stops, turn on the vibrato and go for a theatre organ sound.

I hate any hymn so high-pitched I have to be castrated to sing it. Examples: open up your Lutheran and Episcopalian hymnals.

That amuses me because that is my favorite hymn.

I don't like hymns that make the Christian god out to be something cruel and scary. I can't respect Christianity thinking that, so I don't. I know better; the Christian god is supposed to be loving, forgiving and merciful and I don't like it when Christians paint themselves as something to be hated by their own deity.

Amazing Grace

Really, Amazing Grace? I'm not sure I'd ever met anyone who didn't like that song before... I mean sure there are some words that need some changing, but I think it's pretty.

"The Coloring Song" horribly catchy
Red is the color of the blood that flowed
Down the face of someone who loved us so
He's the perfect man, He's the Lord's own Son
He's the Lamb of God, He's the only one
That can give us life, that can make us grow
That can make the love between us flow

Blue is the color of a heart so cold
That will not bend when the story's told
Of the love of God for a sinful race
Of the blood that flowed down Jesus' face
That can give us life, that can make us grow
That can keep our hearts from growing cold

Gold is the color of the morning sun
That shines so freely on everyone
It's the sun above that keeps us warm
It's the Son of love that calms the storm
That can give us life, that can make us grow
That can turn our mornings into gold
Brown is the color of the autumn leaves
When the winter comes to the barren trees
There is birth; There is death
There is a plan
And there's just one God
And there's just one Man
That can give us life, that can make us grow
That can make our sins as white as snow
That can give is life, that can make us grown
That can turn our mornings into gold
That can give us life, that can make us grow
That can keep our hearts from growing cold
That can give us life, that can make us grow
That can make the love between us flow

I don't know exactly... the words bother me.... they seem like they have so much more potential.

"A Mighty Fortress is Our God." by Martin Luther.
First, I don't like how the whole song goes that is the melody. The history of it is violently anti-catholic ("prince of darkness" is the pope, etc.), although the song can be okay if you don't know it. It still has that war imagery which I don't exactly appreciate.

I'm actually a tenor!! I can't go too high or too low, depending on how well my voice wants to cooperate on any given day. Complicated man, I am.

Chant I can do--and I love it!

Anyone hear that little number "What if cartoons got saved?" It's one of the most idiotic songs you'll hear, yet I'm horrified to say it began to grow on me a little the more times I heard it. Too lazy to look up the words, I have midterms tomorrow. Yikes! Gotta go!

I like you all so much, you are all so funny and smart!

I have to agree with most, especially "What A Friend We Have In Jesus," because that song almost whines.

However, Pablo, have you ever seen the movie Silkwood with Meryl Streep and Cher? Meryl's character sang "Amazing Grace" throughout the movie. It was haunting and beautiful, her singing of that song.
