Hey, guys,
I met a woman in Boston yesterday who was thrown out onto the street when her partner, whom she lived with for twenty years, through her out of his house. Disregarding all the emotional complexities of the situation, I think that she is legally entitled to some division of this man's assets as his common law wife. Isn't it the law that if a couple has been living together for at least seven years, they are considered to be married under common law?
Please also pray for this woman. I felt so bad for her yesterday. She was talking to some people and she was by herself and looked kind of scared, so I went to talk to her and she said she was just wondering if anyone had some spare change. She looked like someone who wasn't used to being on the street and was lost. I told her that I would be happy to take her for lunch, and she said, "oh, you really don't have to do that." I told her that it was all right, that I wanted to. We were eating at burger king and I asked her about her situation, and I really think that she was telling the truth. She said that she had recently become homeless and was trying to get back on her feet but that she couldn't go to the homeless shelter until evening. I gave her five dollars when we were done eating so that she could buy dinner and she started to cry, and I said that it was okay, and she said, "it's just so nice to have someone be so kind to me... " Then she started telling me about her boyfriend/life partner.
What really made me frustrated for her was that she was so close to this man and really missing him, saying that he was her knight in shining armor who had always been there for her and that they had had rough times before but nothing like this. She couldn't understand why he had thrown her out of their house in Newton MA to live on the Boston streets, even though he said that he still cared about her and that they would always be friends. It just broke my heart. I just pray that God will watch over her and convict this man's heart over what he has done.
I got her contact info and I would really like to help this woman in any reasonable way possible, and I was wondering if any of you had some thoughts on her legal situation.
